MARINES dissed in Washington DC bar -- UNBELIEVABLE story

Edited on 01/30/2005 7:45:24 PM PST by Jim Robinson. [history]

A good friend called me a few hours ago terribly upset. Her two sons, both United States Marines, were in Washington DC last night (Saturday) with their dates. They went to the Hawk and Dove, which is a Capitol Hill watering hole.

Now before I go any farther here, understand that I know these two Marines and these are really good kids, hardly the rowdy type -- both went through OCS and are just not the troublemaking types.

At any rate, they were NOT ALLOWED entry into the Hawk and Dove. They were told that the military WAS NOT WELCOME and that especially was true for MARINES.

Is your blood boiling yet???? Mine is. I cannot reveal who these Marines' parents are, but let me tell you, my Freeper brethren, this is a patriotic family who has done much for our nation. (Their mother spends many weekends at Walter Reed with the injured soldiers and even had a house full of them over for Thanksgiving.) I'm telling you, this is an extraordinary family that has given much in service to our country.

So here's the deal. I want this bar to know of our displeasure with their disrespectful behavior toward these two young Marines.

At the very least, I'd like to see a round for these young men on the house and a profuse apology from the owner.

That's exactly how it should be! There are businesses all over Oceanside, CA and Fayetteville, NC, that provide all kinds of services to spouses of deployed servicemen/women. Oil changes, pizzas, car washes, all kinds of stuff.

Last year at CPAC, the color guard could not reach for their wallets -- someone always picked up their checks.

It just seems like it is the right thing to do which is why when I learn of something like refusal of service to these two Marines, it just makes absolutely no sense to me.

If I weren't very close to the family, I would not have believed that our military could be treated in such a fashion nowadays. Can't wait till next time a lib tries to tell me how much they care about soldiers...

This nightspot has the right to do what they did even through because the men in uniform refused service are the ones that maintain that right for them.

There. Fixed it. ;o)

I won't argue about it. It might have been a druggie employee, or a DUer.

I hope the young Marines and their dates can describe in detail the person who denied them entry into the establishment and at what time this occurred. I'm sure the owner will want to know those details. Maybe it was a bouncer making a decision on his own? Let's hope the Marines get an apology and a dinner (though the reviews say the food isn't tip-top).

Hawk and Dove is a few blocks from the Marine Barracks, no?

No doubt. Surprisingly, DC isn't a military town in the traditional sense -- things around here don't revolve around a military base, they revolve around politics, etc. So this might have been some hacked off former-Kerry-campaign-staffer-turned-bouncer itchin' for payback.

Tommy
Rudyard Kipling

I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o'beer,
The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:

O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's ``Thank you, Mister Atkins,'' when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's ``Thank you, Mr. Atkins,'' when the band begins to play.

I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls!

For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside";
But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide,
The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide,
O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide.

Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.

Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy how's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.

We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints:
Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;

While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind,"
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir," when there's trouble in the wind,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir," when there's trouble in the wind.

You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.

For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country," when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
But Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool - you bet that Tommy sees!

Apparently they can, tgs1. Laura Ingraham contacted one of them (they are actually brothers.....) and he has described the whole thing in detail. Looks like she'll be chatting about this tomorrow.

Not sure that they'd like dinner so much as making sure it doesn't happen to any of their brethren.

Been there; I doubt this story.

same here, smells like someone has a "agenda" aside from the fact that the link to the supposed "proof" doesnt work yet people here are so eager to jump the gun and start calling the owner.....for what? Seems to be a lot of suckers on this thread

Not again. I spent some time with my uncle this weekend - a Huey crew chief who served in Vietnam. He is SO worried that what happened to him and his friends is starting again. I for one will not be quiet and watch it happen, that's for darn sure.

I've been there many times, from the early 70's on and the rumor smells perfectly plausible to me. What harm in a little phone call?

Wow! I had heard that DC was out of touch with America but had no idea such things happened there. Maybe the Washington Times could do a little story :o)

God Bless the Marine Corps.

I've been there plenty of times, and seen marines there plenty of times. Did they have ID?

Why? Well for starters it wont be ONE PHONE CALL......it will be a lot. Two, what proof do you have? Three, what if you owned a business and someone came here and said that you threw a rock at a small kid and that everyone should flood your business with phone calls? Would you like that?
