A good friend called me a few hours ago terribly upset. Her two sons, both United States Marines, were in Washington DC last night (Saturday) with their dates. They went to the Hawk and Dove, which is a Capitol Hill watering hole.
Now before I go any farther here, understand that I know these two Marines and these are really good kids, hardly the rowdy type -- both went through OCS and are just not the troublemaking types.
At any rate, they were NOT ALLOWED entry into the Hawk and Dove. They were told that the military WAS NOT WELCOME and that especially was true for MARINES.
Is your blood boiling yet???? Mine is. I cannot reveal who these Marines' parents are, but let me tell you, my Freeper brethren, this is a patriotic family who has done much for our nation. (Their mother spends many weekends at Walter Reed with the injured soldiers and even had a house full of them over for Thanksgiving.) I'm telling you, this is an extraordinary family that has given much in service to our country.
So here's the deal. I want this bar to know of our displeasure with their disrespectful behavior toward these two young Marines.
At the very least, I'd like to see a round for these young men on the house and a profuse apology from the owner.

DarthDilbert already talked to the manager and confirmed the story.
Yeah, I saw those - however, I'll still be calling tomorrow.
:)
To the Mods: I was not encouraging or advocating violence to a COMMUNIST estabishment. I was mearly expressing my sensitivity by being understanding to someone who felt that way. After treating many Marines missing eyes, legs, arms, etc. , I feel a strong and visceral rection to anyone who would treat MY MARINES with less than common courtesy. Please forgive me and please do not ban me for my human fraility.

May I just say your "Forger" program had me rofl. And I needed that.
Here you go: Tommy by Rudyard Kipling.... poem, not song.
Tommy
I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o' beer,
The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:
O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play.
I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls!
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside";
But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide,
The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide,
O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide.
Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.
Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, 'ow's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.
We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;
While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind",
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind.
You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires, an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!
I got that feeling quite a bit while in the Air Force....we ain't no thin blue 'eroes....at least I wasn't!

The above has discussion boards (if that helps).
Hi, Doc.
Thanks for your words here. Between you and our Corpsmen, we Marines are the best cared for troops in the world.

That is definitely passing the buck. I don't believe any insurance co would officially tell a client to refuse service to any group or class of people.
What the ins co may have said is if you have more claims we will have to cancel and the owner took it on himself to decide how to avoid that. As others have said, can you imagine if there was a refusal to serve blacks?
Businesses should be showing gratitude for the men and women whose service keeps this country safe and risk their lives so they can make a buck and live comfortably.
I think they should be treated with respect until they do something that suggests otherwise.
Ok, couple of things. I'll try to answer all the questions here, but bear with me, it has been a particularly long day.
First, God bless all of you veterans who answered my call here. You all never cease to amaze me with your sense of duty and honor.
Now I have spoken with the mother of one of the Marines (who, as I explained before is a close friend and colleague). We have discussed many options and frankly, have not come to any decision yet on the next course of action.
BillF, you recalled that I was an attorney -- in fact, I am not. My husband is, however. (I just play one on tv. KIDDING, folks.) I have not had the chance to delve into this with the husband however. As I said, busy day today.
But it strikes me as so odd that an insurance company would actively promote this kind of policy. Not sure what, if any legal issues are involved here, but luckily, even though I'm not a lawyer, I am pretty much surrounded by a plethora of good conservative lawyers besides my wonderful, long-suffering husband.
When I did have the chance to listen to Laura Ingraham today, I did not hear her entire show and I did not hear her mention the issue, but I know for a fact that she did talk to both the Marine and his mother on Sunday. I'll follow up and try to determine if she spent some broadcast time on it today.
As soon as I determine what the best possible course of action is, I will follow up on this thread.
Thank you all for your patience....
This is a true story- I am the sister of one of the Marines mentioned. They are young officers based in Quantico who after a hard, long week of training went to a rock concert at a club called Nation and then went for a beer afterwards with some female friends. Or tried to anyway. The bouncer was actually very apologetic but said it was the policy there not to admit any military folks. Disgraceful. CG- Thank you for posting! We love you!

Okay, one of the marines is your brother. But WHY can't we know who they are? If they go public, the public outcry will be huge. NO ONE will back this establishment--NO ONE. Even liberal democrat senators will denounce this situation (at least for the television cameras). It will create the kind of fast, powerful moral rebuke that changes institutions and establisments overnight.
You're right- but ultimately it's up to them how they want to handle it. Anyway a few options are being discussed.
Did you happen to hear Laura Ingraham this morning? Did Laura discuss this incident?
(I just caught the last 1/2 hour. No mention of the incident during that time.)
At #274, Conservative GadFly says that Laura talked to one of the Marines and his mother on Sunday, but CG doesn't know if it's been mentioned on Laura's show yet.
Your brother could contact a local television or radio news dept. with the details. The restaurant might change its policy under pressure of negative publicity.
Another approach: your brother and his friends may want to consider going to the restaurant with a formal complaint.
They could directly send a letter of complaint with details of the incident and specically identify what they want the restaurant to do (e.g., change policy, apologize, etc.). They could send it by registered or certified letters to the owner and manager.
They could contact a DC attorney (maybe military legal aid could direct them to an attorney who would do this free?). The attorney could help with the letter of complaint or just get involved if the restaurant won't reverse course, apologize, and/or pay damages (if the Marines want some sort of damages).
Possibly they could ultimately file a complaint (click here) with the DC Office of Human Rights.
Per the linked web site, discrimination is not allowed on the basis of "source of income." I could be wrong, but I think that would outlaw discrimination based on someone's occupation as a Marine.
