The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Some American Mosques Carry Extremist Tracts, Study Says
Full Story

WASHINGTON -- Mosques across the U.S. continue to carry books and pamphlets describing non-Muslims as "infidels" and promoting intolerance against Western society, according to a forthcoming study by Freedom House, a U.S. human-rights group.

Despite vows from American Islamic leaders after Sept. 11, 2001, to proselytize peacefully, New York based Freedom House researchers found 57 documents with incendiary material in more than a dozen mosques and Islamic centers in six states and Washington, D.C., visited over the past year.

You're right.
Of course if it's drugs; that plane won't fly again.

I don't know.

Personal opinion is that on that side of the world;
some things are done differently than here.

I had an uncle who lived in South & Central America from the late 1940's till his death in 1996. If he were here I think he would say your statement is an understatement :-)

I heard about that I can't believe it. Isn't Maine too cold for those people? Are they all on welfare?

BALDACCI AND ALLEN SEEK FEDERAL ASSISTANCE TO ADDRESS INFLUX OF SOMALI IMMIGRANTS

Representatives Baldacci and Allen called for $100,000 in funding to enable Catholic Charities of Maine to provide needed services to Somali immigrants in Lewiston and other communities. Catholic Charities provides outreach and assistance to refugees and immigrants.

Maine has a hard time finding work and feeding their own. Yet Baldacci and Allen want an INFLUX of immigrants! What's up with this!

BALDACCI AND ALLEN SEEK FEDERAL ASSISTANCE TO ADDRESS INFLUX OF SOMALI IMMIGRANTS

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Representatives John Baldacci and Tom Allen announced on Thursday that they are seeking federal funds to help Somali immigrants in Maine. The resources being sought would ease the transition for Somali families in central and southern parts of the state, and ensure that money is also available to continue meeting the needs of other Maine people who are likewise seeking employment opportunities and adequate housing.

In a letter to the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services & Education, Representatives Baldacci and Allen called for $100,000 in funding to enable Catholic Charities of Maine to provide needed services to Somali immigrants in Lewiston and other communities. Catholic Charities provides outreach and assistance to refugees and immigrants.

The appeal to Chairman Ralph Regula (R-Ohio) and Ranking Member David Obey (D-Wisconsin) follows a series of meetings in which Baldacci, Allen and their staff members have worked to determine how the federal government could help Somalis and other immigrants. The assistance being requested would support job placement and relocation initiatives.

“We are writing to urge you to include funding for a critical project in the state of Maine in the Fiscal Year 2003 appropriations legislation for Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education. Specifically, we are seeking $100,000 from the Employment and Training Administration Account for Catholic Charities of Maine to provide refugee services for the influx of Somali refugees moving into Maine,” Baldacci and Allen wrote.

Baldacci and Allen explained that the arrival of Somali families in Maine is expected to continue. Known as secondary migrants, they have relocated from the south -- particularly the Atlanta, Georgia area. Most of the immigrants came to the United States from refugee camps in Kenya, where they fled to escape Somalia's civil war.

Officials believe more immigrants will arrive in Maine during the coming months - with as many as 1,200 settling in Lewiston. The addition of these new families and workers is expected to place a strain on the region’s social service infrastructure. Baldacci and Allen are working to prevent this from happening. The $100,000 appropriation request would help to address the needs of Somali families, and ensure that resources remain available to aid other Mainers who likewise require some support.

“Federal assistance would greatly aid Catholic Charities of Maine as they begin to prepare job placement and relocation services for the incoming Somalis. We hope that there is an opportunity within the Subcommittee to allocate $100,000 from the Employment and Training Administration Account for Catholic Charities of Maine,” Baldacci and Allen added.

In addition to pushing for federal funds, Baldacci and Allen will continue to work with state and local officials to identify collaborative efforts that might benefit both immigrant families, and the communities in which they settle.

The last I heard only 49 out of the 1,200 Somali's were working.  The rest are living off of our welfare system in Maine, straining it badly.

They will only work 4 hours a day, and what employer is going to hire someone that can only work 4 hours a day! This is ridiculous!

"Teen Sniper No Longer Faces Death Penalty"

By MATTHEW BARAKAT

ASSOCIATED PRESS

McLEAN, Va. (AP) -

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The U.S. Supreme Court ruling Tuesday barring the execution of juvenile killers means Lee Boyd Malvo can no longer face the death penalty for his role in the 2002 Washington sniper case or other slayings around the country.

Malvo, who was 17 at the time of the shootings, has already been convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole for two of the murders. Prosecutors had planned to try him in other jurisdictions in hopes of obtaining a death sentence.

However, Prince William County Commonwealth's Attorney Paul Ebert said that in light of the ruling, he would not pursue another conviction against Malvo.

"I see no need to go to the expense and the trouble," Ebert said.

Malvo also faced the possibility of a death sentence in Alabama and Louisiana, where he and accomplice John Allen Muhammad are charged with other slayings.

In Louisiana, East Baton Rouge District Attorney Doug Moreau said his office would still seek to prosecute Malvo for the slaying of Hong Im Ballenger, who was gunned down in Baton Rouge in the weeks before the sniper spree. "Obviously, we can't seek the death penalty," Moreau said.

In Alabama, Montgomery County District Attorney Ellen Brooks said she still plans to prosecute Malvo in the 2002 slaying of a liquor store manager. "I'm just waiting my turn," she said.

Muhammad is already on death row in Virginia."

Is Maine's Catholic Charities exempt from the audit and investigation that is going on?

I thought they could receive any federal monies until the investigation is over?

EU back Russia, Iran despite (to spite?) US

LUXEMBOURG (AFP):
The European Union (news - web sites) and Russia joined forces over Iran (news - web sites), denying that a Moscow deal to help Tehran power up its first nuclear reactor will undermine EU-led diplomatic pressure on the Islamic state.

The EU, ignoring US protests, said it had no problems with the weekend deal for the Russian-built power plant at Bushehr in southern Iran, a project the United States alleges is part of a cover for weapons development.
