The problem with this is that it seems so fortuitous. I bet that the insurgents now think that they are blessed by AllahThey can think whatever they want for the short time on earth they have remaining.
God will not be mocked.

I am reading Band of Brothers by Stephen E. Ambrose. It's almost totally incomprehensible to read that during the battle of Market Garden in the Netherlands, preceding the Battle of the Bulge, 8,000, yes, that's eight thousand, American and British troops were killed, wounded or captured in a period of 9 days fighting!!!! And that's one battle in World War II.
I'm a firm believer in making this book, and also Flag of our Fathers, about the 5 Marines who raised the flag on Iwo Jima, and the horrendous struggle and loss of life in that island, required reading in all schools. People need to knowm and never forget, the incredible sacrifices made by our military.
Ask your children what they are reading in school--you will not believe it, in many cases. They are being taught trash and this is why you need to be involved.

Afternoon to you as well.
When all you have to hit is a section of a city, kill anybody, scare the crap out of people, to achieve your goals, you are in a good tactical situation.
Eventually, they will be brought down. There are just a lot of munitions floating around in Iraq to keep someone who is dedicated enough from doing these types of things. It will take Iraqis to ferret these guys out permanently. We will kill the ones we can. I honor your service my friend.

And did you see the first part which showed all the bomb damage (including bunker busters) of the palace above but did not damage the bunker below? US forces only found the bunker by accident. That one boot you speak of confirms my belief that yes, there were WMD's and someday that will be proven. Saddam and guards could have ridden out much of the war for months in that bunker but instead elected to hide in a spider hole. One day I'd like to read the story of how that came about.

We would not be the ones to do the deed. It will be the Iraqi soldiers themselves under orders from the acting PM.

Good afternoon.
Our forces were gone by 1973. American aviation units helped stop the NVA offensive in 1972, using the TOW missile in combat for the first time to kill NVA armor, but most American forces were gone by then. The ARVN also put up a good fight, killing enough communists that it took the bad guys another three years to build up enough force to launch the final offensive.
Democrats in Congress and media icons like Cronkite ensured a commie victory in the end by cutting off all material support for the South Vietnamese. I don't think our president and our military will allow that to happen in Iraq.
The next few hours should be very exciting.
Good luck to our forces and the people of Iraq.

Every time I see Teddy I am amazed at how much abuse the human liver can take.
He would love to see us fail in Iraq. It would be just another excuse to call for a pullout. He's good at leaving people to drown.
He did it on Chappaquiddick.
He did it to South Viet Nam.
He tried to do it to Nicaragua.
And now he wants to do it to Iraq.
He has been living off the memory of his brothers for years. He's a disgrace.

FoxNews is mentioning that the troops were able to trace the trajectory back to the source and a surveillance drone immediately spotted two cars driving away from the launch spot and followed it back to a house where seven men got out and went inside. The house was immediately surrounded and all seven were arrested. Five tested positive for rocket motor residue.
Hang 'em high.

I am certain the Iraqis are better at that than the Viet Cong were. Thankfully they aren't. 120's make a big thud even when they don't explode.
Rockets and mortars and bombs, oh my!

It is now 1:15 a.m. Sunday in Baghdad. The people will soon be coming out to vote. My prayers are going up for all the people and military.
I just found out that my 17 year old grandson joined the Marines on a delayed entry. He will finish high school and then do basic in August. I pray that things will be settled down by then.

Admin Moderator, this had become the ad hoc thread for ongoing live reports about the Iraqi elections. Maybe we could make it the official live thread so people know where to go for all the news in one place?

the election will go on despite what they do..they will not stop it..so how can it matter that much? Besides, Satan (Allah) will fool everyone, including his minions...

You know at this point I would like to see killed instead of caputurd. As you said how many more of our troops will be killed and still have to wear kid gloves with the captured.

Are you the keeper of Howlin's live thread ping list while she's on vacation? If you are, or you know who is, this thread's morphing into a live thread of Iraqi election day news.

I wish I saved the link to a LONG article that detailed why Arabs suck in combat. Something about initiative being discouraged and information being hoarded. It's cultural. Here you go: Why Arabs Lose Wars
