GREER, S.C. -- A woman from Greer has taken a complaint to the American Civil Liberties Union, stating that the Commission of Public Works' new calendar is inappropriate for a public utilities company.
The calendar in question is given as a free gift to CPW's customers and has a bible verse printed on each day of the year.
"It is religion creeping in, inch by inch, to government," said Sheila Jackson.
Jackson and Mike Cubelo of the ACLU are asking CPW to recognize the changing face of a city.
"We were informed that Greer CPW handed out Christian calendars this year and that it was traditional to do so. In addition, we heard that Greer CPW staff was required to say prayers before staff meetings," ACLU Piedmont chapter president Mike Cubelo said in a letter to the Greer CPW. "Obviously, our concern is that public funds and time are being used for religious purposes."
"Greer is growing right now, and its population is much more diversified than it was maybe three to four years ago," Cubelo told WYFF News 4.
CPW turned the complaint over to its attorney, who declined to comment on the case.
Why doesn't she just throw her calendar away or give it to someone else? What's the big deal?
I agree 100%. However, some people have no common sense.
Because it is not about freedom at all. It is about trying to force Christianity completely out of public life altogether.
Oh, brother. Some people get offended at the dumbest things. Thanks for the ping, upchuck.
But you don't understand. Someone may like it, may even see value in it. Can't have that. Public money should be spent on things with little or no value.
I guess if they'd put pictures of pigs in there some obese person would bring a lawsuit too.
I wondered if that was rhetorical on another thread you posted, since you and I both know the answer.
Meanwhile the names of the cities of Los Angeles, Corpus Christi, St Paul, St Loius, and San Diego completely escape the ACLUs attention somehow.....
