Rick Dembow January 28, 2005 -- A stunning 28-year-old actress died in her fiancé's arms yesterday after a Lower East Side thug answered her challenge "What are you going to do, shoot us?" by firing a single bullet into her chest, cops said. Nicole DuFresne, of Brooklyn, had just left a trendy bar with her fiancé and another couple when they were confronted at about 3:15 a.m. by four muggers two men and two women at the corner of Clinton and Rivington streets, police said. One of the thugs, who was carrying a gun, demanded money. DuFresne's fiancé, Jeffrey Sparks, 28, not seeing the mugger had a gun and not taking the request seriously, tried to push past the man.

I think it's pretty obvious this flaming leftist wouldn't have had a gun even if the law required her to.
One of the things I would do when I was out late in Manhattan after a night out drinking with friends was to put my hand in my jacket pocket when a thug was approaching and give him a look in the eyes that said "you don't know if I'm a Bernie Getz or not." It wasn't a threatening look, but it was a look that said "find someone else because I might have a gun."
Now, I can afford to take cabs home and I'm not out drinking late any more now that I'm no longer single. But the best thing to do is be aware of your surroundings, don't be an obvious drunk, take a taxi home late at night, and don't dare a wolfpack kid to shoot you.
Oh dear me. I probably did confuse you. She had a massive heart attach about 7 years before this incident. So they told her that with her heart being so bad if there was ever a chance of surgery she probably wouldn't make it through the surgery. All had to do with the heart not the broken leg. Although the leg had to be fixed her body just couldn't handle the surgery.
"Clearly those couples had no clue how to behave in Brooklyn..."
For the record, yes, I know that they were from Brooklyn and were attacked on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. I corrected that so no need to post any more corrections. Now, that being said, bad stuff can happen to folks who are street smart, too. No one is immune. One would think though that someone in the group would have just said, "Give him your wallet. We don't want any trouble. Here's the money."
Especially in this day and age when three out of four of them probably had cell phones and could have dialed 911 before the thugs even got to the corner. Its just not worth risking your life. Its definitely not worth giving them some preppy, liberal, westchester attitude. The guy probably shot her because he had heard that attitude somewhere before and it set him off.
Cooperate in that situation and work on getting justice later.
Dare I ask what her 'causes' were...
"The Chelsea-Clinton neighborhood, formerly know as Hell's Kitchen".
No, no, Clinton IS the name that gentrifiers tried to give to Hell's Kitchen, but Clinton Street is not in that neighborhood. Hell's Kitchen/Clinton and Chelsea are on the West Side of Manhattan, above 20th Street.
This unfortunate woman was killed on the East Side south of Houston Street, which is equal to 1st Street on the grid.
It's funny how Chelsea Clinton's name works out though, the neighborhoods ARE next to each other, I really never realized that before!
Great!
Yes indeed, that's probably the message they got from my DH too. He was really a nice gentle polite fellow, but when we'd visit NY and especially Brooklyn, he'd turn into someone else entirely. Once a man came up to him on the street in Manhattan and asked "Do you still do your own killing?" Mistook him for someone else apparently. I hope.
"Lots of police in Penn station"
So, they will be sure to catch the thug after he mugs and kills you?
Maybe the point is that, sadly, her naivety and inablility to recognize evil in the world for what it is led to her unfortunate death?
You don't live in New York do you? Either that or you haven't been to Penn Station lately.
What I am saying is that if you start taking these cretins that "get-off" in the liberal courts, and issuing some old fashioned justice....some might think twice.
Even though I've lived here for more than 15 years, I still love this song by Buck Owens:
I Wouldn't Live in New York City
It ain't nothin' but a concrete jungle with people packed like sardines
Where everybody's tryin' to live beyond their means
Where all the natives hurry and scurry too and fro
And like a fleas on a puppy dog they got no place to go
I wouldn't live in New York City if they gave me the whole dang town
Talk about a bummer it's the biggest one around
Sodom and Gommorah was tame to what I found
I wouldn't live in New York City if they gave me the whole dang town
Well I ain't seen the sunshine since the day that I arrived
Cause brother I've been busy a tryin' to survive
Nobody knows you've been here till you're six feet under ground
Than you become a statistic if they remember to write you down
I wouldn't live in New York City if they gave me the whole dang town
Talk about a bummer it's the biggest one around
Sodom and Gommorah was tame to what I found
I wouldn't live in New York City if they gave me the whole dang town
When I start getting above $3,000, it becomes a little more difficult to write the check.
I don't think this woman did anything wrong. This happened in my neighborhood and as it was described it could have happened to any of us.
The few times that I have had street confrontations I took a similiar approach. When confronted by thugs I generally cut loose with a string of aggressive absurd obscenities. It has worked like a charm. Most street thugs are at heart, cowards. Theoretically her approach should have done the trick. If you exhibit any hesitation you've had it.
You need a reason to be in NYC. People who don't have a reason for being here generally move or self-destruct. NYC has pretty much made all my dreams come true, though it took longer than anticipated.
Smoking marijuana Watching channel five Got to get my strength up In this struggle to survive
Everyone's an asshole Everyone's a creep I look out my window And there's garbage in the streets
I live in the city I breathe dirty air I ride trains with b-boys junkies, queens and squares
Everybody's hungry I don't know what to do I used to live on pizza Now I live on Chinese food
I can't stand my neighbors Screaming all the time If I wasn't blasting Sister ray I could lose my mind
I live in the city I breathe dirty air I ride trains with b-boys junkies, queens and squares
Safely someone's smiling The fat man waits his turn Soon he'll count his money While the south Bronx slowly burns Get out for the children Get your ass and run Get out of this stinkin mess To a safe suburban slum
I live in the city I breathe dirty air I ride trains with b-boys junkies, queens and squares!
New York, New York
New York, New York
New York, New York
ARE YOU TALKIN TA ME!!!
Bay Ridge is one of the few nabes where it is better to tak the bus to "the city" than take the subway. Spend an hour on the N or the R and you will encounter more breakdowns, psychopaths, and illegal aliens than John Rocker's beloved 7 train.
