Rick Dembow January 28, 2005 -- A stunning 28-year-old actress died in her fiancé's arms yesterday after a Lower East Side thug answered her challenge — "What are you going to do, shoot us?" — by firing a single bullet into her chest, cops said. Nicole DuFresne, of Brooklyn, had just left a trendy bar with her fiancé and another couple when they were confronted at about 3:15 a.m. by four muggers — two men and two women — at the corner of Clinton and Rivington streets, police said. One of the thugs, who was carrying a gun, demanded money. DuFresne's fiancé, Jeffrey Sparks, 28, not seeing the mugger had a gun and not taking the request seriously, tried to push past the man.

I don't have a victim attitude. Assume that fact without reservation. However, the best defense against muggers is simply to not put yourself in a position to be mugged. That is, playing the odds. Knowing where you are and who is there with you at all times. If you are mugged, then complete the transaction as quickly as possible.
Works in Texas. You never know what the dog may be packing.:-)

Despite his admirable performance on 9/11, Giuliani is a RINO and unfit for the White House. Fortunately, we don't have to worry about it. He would never make it through the primaries.
His Leftist ideological stands --rigidly anti-gun rights, pro-'gay' rights, and pro-abortion-- alone would preclude Giuliani's winning enough delegates to get the nomination.
And there's one other factor I believe would sink him: His personal life. Unlike Dims who slobbered all over Clinton, conservatives won't take kindly to a man who dumped his first two wives and carried on affairs publicly while married.
No, I'm not a liberal. But let me run down how a NYC mugging happens. You get some kid (16-24) who is jacked up on adrenalin. He jumps out and surprises you. The gun is up and about 6 inches from either your chest or your head, depending on where you are in the city.
At this point there's no opportunity to reach for a piece or to shoot, even if you have one in your hand. So you hand him the wallet, cash, etc.
The gun is still out and still pointed at you. At this point he has a choice. He can either shoot you or take the money and run. Most take the money and run.
Now, the kid is halfway down the block. You have a choice: either pull your piece and shoot or call 911. If you do shoot, I promise you, you will hit something that breaks. Either a car window or a person or a store window. You may hit the mugger, in which case your life becomes a hell for the next six months before you are cleared. You will need a lawyer. You will miss work. Best case scenario, you hit a store window.That's about $1,100 to replace. And you will need a lawyer and you will miss work.
One less pro-choice voter, based on that site.

Then you're already dead before the idea of the alley enters their mind. You never see the gun, and you never see them.
HOW CAN THIS BE?? This is NYC where it is ILLEGAL to carry a gun unless you are a cop or a celebrity. We can assume that the victims would have recognized a celebrity, so the only conclusion anyone can draw is that they were mugged by cops.
The other unthinkable (for the idiots who live and vote in NYC) conclusion is that criminals don't obey gun laws, but Bloomturd, Sara Brady and NY's "finest" have all said repeatedly that this isn't true and that the police will protect you.
This story must be a mistake.
Yes sometimes I would not choose to, but other times I would. I WANT THAT CHOICE and do not want to depend on some judge, legislator or mayor for that right. See: Bill of Rights, 2nd Amendment.

Her defiance is most likely what got her killed. Acknowledging that isn't blaming the victim, especially when it is clear that her response to seeing a gun pointed at her was so obviously exactly the wrong one. She wasn't just an unlucky victim, she contributed to her own death.
It's a lesson that many who read about this sad story should learn.
The last time I was mugged the guy took the $40 I had in my pocket, but missed the $20,000 I had stuffed in my boots (bar receipts for a night deposit).
I'm certain there are scenarios that I could think of that require a gun. A friend of mine did collections for a check cashing place and he carried a gun.
As for myself, if I'm out at 3 a.m., I try to stay on busy streets and take cabs.
