ACTRESS SLAIN

Rick Dembow January 28, 2005 -- A stunning 28-year-old actress died in her fiancé's arms yesterday after a Lower East Side thug answered her challenge — "What are you going to do, shoot us?" — by firing a single bullet into her chest, cops said. Nicole DuFresne, of Brooklyn, had just left a trendy bar with her fiancé and another couple when they were confronted at about 3:15 a.m. by four muggers — two men and two women — at the corner of Clinton and Rivington streets, police said. One of the thugs, who was carrying a gun, demanded money. DuFresne's fiancé, Jeffrey Sparks, 28, not seeing the mugger had a gun and not taking the request seriously, tried to push past the man.

I suspect this woman was suffering from the liberal delusion that simply because she was liberal, she was somehow immune from crime.

I think she learned in this episode that her view of the world was fundamentally flawed...it wasn't the intrinsically safe place she thought it to be.

Sadly, she never had the opportunity to apply the lesson.

I agree

You must engage them in conversation, tell them of your kids, your hopes, that you are human

If you are in a situation that is going to possibly get you killed, be kind, it makes the person who is the enemy think, act kind in return...sort of.

MAKE them see you are human, not some screaming banshee.

let them hear of your kids, your sick mom.

then, when you have the opening, kill them.

Uh, it's a mugging not group therapy. Give them the money, complete the transaction as quickly as possible and hope they leave in a horry.

So she was a flaming liberal

That still don't give anyone the right to kill her!

My condolances go out to her family and friends.

I'll take my chances being armed rather than take my chances being unarmed. That's freedom of choice.

Who said that (besides you)?

And when the opportunity arises to save your life or your wife, girlfriend, family member, etc. use the most vicious strike or blow to the body that you can make if you do not have an available weapon. Strike the Adams apple, the sternum, knee caps, kidney shot, the temple, the groin, etc. your first shot may be your last. Again, this is after recognizing you are in a fight for your life and opportunity to retreat safely is not an option. take your wife/girlfriend to self defense classes, buy them legal available weapons that fit on a key chain or purse. Talk to them about street awareness at all times.

Yeah, pretty much. You pays your money and takes your chances. I have no problem with law abiding citizens carrying guns. And in some instances, they no doubt can prove effective. But even with a gun, you're still working with pretty much the same odds.

Well, it probably made you feel better, but could have just as easily gotten you killed. Unless you shoot someone and kill them instantly (a pretty neat trick) then there's a good chance that either they or their partner will start shooting back.

Sorry, but this "just be a victim" attitude is nauseating, and does nothing but embolden the criminal element as a whole. There have been plenty of successful self-defense shootings here in the South, where plenty of people carry, and quite a number of them against multiple attackers. There have also been plenty of people who complied with everything the criminal wanted, only to be knelt down in the back of their place of business and had a bullet put in their heads (if they were lucky and they weren't women to be made a plaything of first).

It's important to know when to fight and when to flee, and how to avoid having to do either, but when the gun or knife comes out, sorry, the full-tilt boogie has begun and you had BETTER assume it's life or death.

Exactly. These were 4 teenage animals who wanted to "get paid", not engage in conversation. I live in NYC and know the type of these kids. There are the lowest level of animals. You either run or give them the money. Darwin or law enforcement will catch up with these kids eventually. You have to pick your battles and these perps are not the type to pick a battle with unless you're armed.

Really. If this actress had a gun, she might have been killed.

Good points, but concealed carry makes many criminals think before they attack you. They don't want to get shot either. And studies show that crime has plummetted in counties or cities that allow concealed carry.

Notice how all the murder capitals in the US don't allow concealed carry and many don't allow guns (like my hometown of Chicago)? If these cities allowed it, crime would drop.

Not in New York City. They only do the thugs if they kill a cop.

Find the killer and send him to old sparky.

They'll find him, but they'll plea-bargain it to a couple years and (most likely) an apology from the court for taking away his liberty.

Sorry I snapped, I had a bad week.

But I was just saying that no matter what she was in life, she didn't deserve to be shot by a small time thug. That's all i meant.

anyway I don't know who else says it but SOMEONE had to.

now I'll get out while the going gets good! :o)

I don't get your math: perp has gun and I don't = I have no chance. Perp has gun and I have one also = incredibly better chance to stop him and save my life.

Are you a liberal, 'cause you really sound like one?

I guess I was just a bit sad at the irony of the moment: surely a liberal such as her was anti-gun...a mistake that cost her life.

Don't make eye contact..this goes for wild animals...

My Aikido instructor taught me the opposite, not making contact and looking down or away shows weakness and victim status, easy prey. This couple's problem was letting their guards down and no means of proper defense.

You can maintain a strong attitude and body positioning without using a penetrating/challenging gaze and confrontational stance.

He knows that he has you in a vulnerable position. It is wise to not make him feel like he has to prove it to you.
