Third columnist caught with hand in the Bush till Michael McManus, conservative author of the syndicated column "Ethics & Religion," received $10,000 to promote a marriage initiative.

Jan. 27, 2005 | And three makes a trend.

One day after President Bush ordered his Cabinet secretaries to stop hiring commentators to help promote administration initiatives, and one day after the second high-profile conservative pundit was found to be on the federal payroll, a third embarrassing hire has emerged. Salon has confirmed that Michael McManus, a marriage advocate whose syndicated column, "Ethics & Religion," appears in 50 newspapers, was hired as a subcontractor by the Department of Health and Human Services to foster a Bush-approved marriage initiative. McManus championed the plan in his columns without disclosing to readers he was being paid to help it succeed.

Pathetic... Ronald Reagan never had the heart to fire anyone either,
OUTRIGHT LIE.

Can you say "Air traffic controllers" (remember PATCO)?

Great, I knew you could ...

This is standard operating proceedure. There was an article earlier today about the liberal reporters that were on the Clinton payroll.

Libs don't see anything wrong with it when they do it, Why should it be an outrage when a conservative does it.

The question has to be asked. Is Grover Norquist Jr., in any way, involved in, or accessory to this travesty? This sort of "money talks" BS, combined with media access, would be right up his alley. Just askin' ....

Clinton was a filthy lying rapist moral degenerate. So we should feel reassured that this administration was simply living up to the standards established by the Impeached Rapist?

Weak attempt to take words out of context. Referring to administration officials.

it is Meet the New Boss, Same as the Old Boss...

Only the lyrics would have to be changed to...

The Party on Right,
Is now the Party on the Left
Pushing through things they used to fight.

Ambrose, do you suppose this is the first time in our history this has happened? I think not, but that this is going to be made into a large scandal by the left who have had the majority of the mainstream media in their pockets for years.

I'd like to see the whole story. I don't like the idea of payola. However, I also would like the full story. I don't trust the MSM, and most of the people listed are not movers and shakers. If guys who actually had persuasive power were receiving money, I might be concerned, but paying people to produce stuff for government purposes is pretty common. Most of the "Dust Bowl" pictures produced that were used to promote Franklin Roosevelt's policies were produced by people on the Federal payroll. I believe Ansel Adams produced many of his photographs of National Parks for federal dollars, and those photographs were used to promote the national parks systems. The Sierra Club makes extensive use of them.

Bottom line is, I don't like payola, but I do want to know the context of the payments before I rend my garments and cover myself with sackcloth and ashes.

That's like William Bennett -- that bastion of morality, that paragon of virtue -- who was discovered to be a high-stakes gambler.

These ethics and virtue guys aren't doing very well. They preach ethics & virtue & morality, but don't follow it in their own lives.

Oh, NOW you qualify it.

DO you even KNOW how much heat he caught after that?

PROBABLY NOT.

BTW, the only 'weak' case being presented here is being based on a story straight out of Salon ...

This is but the tip of the iceberg in media scandals. Will be interesting to watch if the MSM decides to make this into a Watergatelike scandal. When the don't, its most likely because they don't want to be outted themselves! IMO, most of the whole lot in media are sorry bought off scumbags.

I think you've merged some apples and oranges; do they mix well for you that way, or are you simply looking for 'ins' to land some cheap shots at Bennett?

Take a vacation, here why don't ya - THESE GUYS JUST LOVE TO HATE CONSERVATIVES TOO!

BTW, we won't ask about YOUR 'ethically led' life either.

Casting aspersions, or just stones?

WHAT I find interesting is that you seem nearly completely immune to logic and facts; take for instance the fact that ONE of these people you allege to have received payola WAS PAID TO DO RESEARCH, yet, you completely GLOSS OVER and ignore this factoid.

This leads me to believe that you are a) cognitively impaired or b) intentionally ignoring exculpatory facts.

Which is it?

But we need to be better. Seriously, we do. We MUST lead by example. We, the REAL up and coming leaders of the 21st century GOP, must hold no quarter to corruption and to any emulation in our own ranks of the tactics of the undermining left. Let us not emulate the filth.

I would like to see it too. That said, I know there are a few (thankfully not many) dirty people still allowed to blight the GOP. We must cast them aside with abandon, and utterly disown them without appeal.
