Goodbye to Independence?
The New American ^ | February 7, 2005 | William F. Jasper

Besides driving whole industries and millions of jobs offshore, U.S. trade agreements are threatening our national independence and freedom.

The Jolly Green Giant has been a landmark around Dayton, Washington, for generations. But he does not seem so jolly these days. In fact, the fading outline of the 300-foot tall brand name icon is barely visible now on the hillside above town. This June, Dayton’s asparagus cannery, the world’s largest, will see its last season. Seneca Foods, which cans about half of the state’s $30 million asparagus crop for General Mills’ Green Giant label, is closing the Dayton plant and moving operations to Peru.

For this proud farming town, with a population of about 2,700, and for the whole surrounding county, the closure is a huge blow. For 70 years, the cannery has been the area’s biggest employer and biggest taxpayer. It provided 50 year-round jobs and 1,000 seasonal jobs during the summer harvest months. The closure will also mean the end of about 2,000 seasonal jobs in the asparagus fields across southeastern Washington.

"Treaties are adopted by 2/3rds of the Senate, which under the initial Constitution was comprised of representatives chosen by State legislatures."

SM, Not only has that changed, but our trade agreements thus far are NOT "treaties". They have been given to the whole of Congress for an "up or down" vote. Not just the senate. Peace and love, George.

the connection between the obliteration of the middle class via the globalization of commerce and the erosion of the Second Amendment.

It seems to be starting with the globalization of commerce. Make no mistake that is not the end objective! If it were, the erosion of the Second Amendment would have no value beyond mere liberalism. The final objective is a true erasure of international borders. A surrender of sovereignty to the UN and the total dismantlement of the US Constitution. To do that requires the UN have a powerful standing army and that it's future subjects have no means to resist effectively.

One part is being accomplished in the public schools. Their globalist agenda is brainwashing kids into thinking that guns are evil and so is anyone who even wants to keep a gun in their home. I know this for a fact, I've been a teacher in the public high schools for sixteen years. But it's not enough to do this and let the old guard die off. That's why I think that the UN agenda is going to be jump started sooner. They don't want to wait a generation to let the happen in a natural fashion. They want what they want and they want it right now.

our trade agreements thus far are NOT "treaties".

True enough but that does not mean that the treaty making powers or their effect on our laws has faded. Say a US President were to make a treaty with the UN to totally disarm the American population as a sign to the UN community that America wished to be a true partner in global peace....(barf!) Ratification of such a treaty would cut across the US Constitution as part of the aforementioned mechanism and make it a lawful part of our lives. Whether we would let it stand as such without taking up arms is another matter. Hence the moves to unilateral personal disarmament we currently see.

A typical move we can expect from the Democraps, should they ever return to power in the Executive and legislative branch at the same time. God help us if they ever control all three branches at the same time with the DEAN brand of political theory ascendant.

Yet, according to the U.S. Constitution (Article VI), which all of our elected and appointed officials have been sworn to uphold and defend, it is the Constitution which is the “supreme law of the land” — not trade agreements or treaties that conflict with the Constitution

Actually, as of right now treaties DO in fact supercede the Constitution. Bills introduced in the 1950's to rectify this were defeated.

It has been discussed here on Free Republic.

It is one reason not to ratify things like the Kyoto Accords. They would put the Congress and law enforcement into a hammerlock unless or until the US formally withdrew.

Best regards,
