Navy photos of Submarine USS San Francisco in Dry Dock (you won't believe the extent of damage!)

The amount of damage is simply staggering!

That this boat ever made it back to port is a tribute to its designers, builders, and especially to the crew and captain. How does America keep finding men like these?

According to memory the charts were very deficient to the point that a prudent man would not travel on this heading at flank speed.

I believe that this issue was hashed out pretty well by others. If you really cannot find a reference to this I will do your research for you this one time.

The way flame wars on FR are typically started is someone making statements that they either cannot back up or have not researched, not by calling them on it as I have done.

I predict that the USS San Francisco will never be operational again.

Given the extent of the damage shown in the few pics here there is certainly more damage that is hidden.

As stated earlier, she is a 20 year old boat. The cost and time required to repair the damage and test to insure there isn't hidden damage internal to other systems does not work in her favor. The schedule to retire her will be revised, and another boat will take her operational place.

Further, there is the human/political angle. What President, SecDef, SecNav would want his/her name on the order that returned her to sea if she later went down for unknown reasons. Her systems have been over stressed.

San Francisco is now of greater value to the people that design and build subs. She will most likely be cut apart piece by piece and examined to see just how well is was able to survive this event. Some pieces will go to other boats. Life goes on.

I hope there are new boats being built to replace eache of these. Seems like our subs are being built at a snails pace compared to the rate of LAs being decommissioned.

How do you determine when charts are deficient? Do they put a special symbol on them, like a big "D", for "deficient"?

Yes, the text under the photo identifies it as the Kursk , (which was a Russian Sub).

How do you determine when charts are deficient?

I would have thought that the charts for a 500 mile radius around Guam would be perfect.

Could one assume that every boat has a unique sonar sig, and that slight bulge changes its sig, or does it make it worse?

I would think that having a bent frame in the middle there is not at all desirable but given its location, makes it even more of a *itch to fix.

YOU never saw the charts so how would you know! If you had read the threads you would realize your error.

After a sub hits a mountain around Guam at flank speed killing a fellow human I think that I would make the big "D" red.

This is exactly why I wanted the "expert" to look it up himself and read all of the relative posts. Since when is that too damn much to ask??

So there was no valid disscussion that the charts were deficient?

If the chart was accurate and the Captain picked a course that would lead them into a mountain would you just brace yourself and hit it?
