The number of Iraqi civilians killed during the occupation of Iraq has reached 10,000, peace activists tracking the casualties say.
More civilians have died since the end of Saddam Hussein's regime than during the invasion to topple him, according to Iraq Body Count.
Month-by-month figures computed by the group show that by yesterday morning between 9,999 and 10,586 civilians have been killed since May 1, 2003 - when President George W Bush declared the end of "major combat operations".
This is higher than the estimated 7,350 civilians killed during the war itself.
"Sometimes you need a specific round number to bring home to people the enormity of what is happening," said John Sloboda, co-founder of Iraq Body Count.
"More people have died in the so-called post-conflict phase than during the conflict. It shows that the war has never ended."
A study published last year in The Lancet estimated civilian deaths at 100,000. The coalition does not provide figures of civilian deaths.
The Iraq Body Count data shows a large increase last spring during the failed US operation to retake Fallujah and the uprising by the radical Shia cleric, Muqtada al-Sadr.
Since then, the number of civilians killed has varied between 200 and 500 a month.
"Very few of those deaths would have occurred had the US and UK not decided to invade," said Mr Sloboda, "In a very real sense we are responsible for them."
Iraq Body Count collates casualty figures based on reports from two media sources or government and NGO reports.
They need to get it up to at least 80,000,000 -- that's the lower estmate of the number killed by Communist governments.
That's because when the Americans were doing the bombing, we didn't TARGET civilians. Also, WAY fewer Iraqis have died since this war began than when Sadaam was still in power!
Who is killing all these Iraqi civilians, now? Their Muslim brothers are doing the killing, and I think with the election this weekend, we'll see just what the Iraqis think of the terrorists in their midst.
300 000 * Human Rights Watch: "twenty-five years of Ba`th Party rule ... murdered or 'disappeared' some quarter of a million Iraqis" [http://www.hrw.org/wr2k4/3.htm]* 8/9 Dec. 2003 AP: Total murders
o New survey estimates 61,000 residents of Baghdad executed by Saddam.
o US Government estimates a total of 300,000 murders
+ 180,000 Kurds k. in Anfal
+ 60,000 Shiites in 1991
+ 50,000 misc. others executed
o "Human rights officials" est.: 500,000
o Iraqi politicians: over a million
* [These don't include the million or so dead in the Iran-Iraq War.]
* personal note. Iran-Iraq estimate is both sides.. splits range from 30-70 to 50-50...*
I found varying estimates on death tolls depending on where you go, who you ask, who does the telling..
Regardless, Saddam was on a par with Pol Pot for murdering his own people..
And we're pretty sure he was not above hunting down "special targets" in other countries and having them eliminated..
Of course, these same liberals have no objection to the slaughter at Waco under Clinton.
This is just as looney as the Sunnis calling for a six-month delay in the elections because of a lack of security. The lack of security is because of the Sunnis blowing up everything in sight with IEDs.
Hey, I tell you what. Why not split the difference and call it, oh say, 5 billions. After all, they would never lie to us, would they....
Good link on the casualties, Drammach. Thanks.
They may know the Lancet is wrong, but their first loyalty is to the credo of "No enemies on the left".
Mr Sloboda: "In a very real sense we are responsible for them."
Well....you need to do a better job of protecting them.
So at which point will the Iraqi people finally get sick and tired of this, say enough is enough and deal with this scum themselves? Hell, like every house has an AK. Or is it always going to be Americans or Brits or whom ever who has to clean up their own mess. Mind boggling, considering the vast majority of the casualties are civilians.
"It's all Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics, as Mark Twain wrote."
The quote is "There are lies, damned lies, and statistics." The originator was Benjamin Disraeli, 19th Century Prime Minister of Great Britain.
The good news is blacks, homosexuals, the homeless, women and children are affected least.
What a bunch of CRAP!!.. First of all how many of these civilians were killed by terrorists or bathists? Secondly, given Saddam and his regime killed roughly 2 MILLION IRAQIs during his 30 years in power, that means another roughly 56,666 Iraqi' civilians in the last 12 months would have been dead, along with this 10,000 number JUST TO EQUAL the AVERAGE of Saddams abuses.....
These communists just need to be laughed off the stage like the unserious jokes that they are.
LOL!
Reports of their deaths were greatly exaggerated?
