Civilian Deaths 'Reaching 10,000'
London Daily Telegraph | January 27, 2005 | By Anton La Guardia

The number of Iraqi civilians killed during the occupation of Iraq has reached 10,000, peace activists tracking the casualties say.

More civilians have died since the end of Saddam Hussein's regime than during the invasion to topple him, according to Iraq Body Count.

Month-by-month figures computed by the group show that by yesterday morning between 9,999 and 10,586 civilians have been killed since May 1, 2003 - when President George W Bush declared the end of "major combat operations".

This is higher than the estimated 7,350 civilians killed during the war itself.

"Sometimes you need a specific round number to bring home to people the enormity of what is happening," said John Sloboda, co-founder of Iraq Body Count.

"More people have died in the so-called post-conflict phase than during the conflict. It shows that the war has never ended."

A study published last year in The Lancet estimated civilian deaths at 100,000. The coalition does not provide figures of civilian deaths.

The Iraq Body Count data shows a large increase last spring during the failed US operation to retake Fallujah and the uprising by the radical Shia cleric, Muqtada al-Sadr.

Since then, the number of civilians killed has varied between 200 and 500 a month.

"Very few of those deaths would have occurred had the US and UK not decided to invade," said Mr Sloboda, "In a very real sense we are responsible for them."

Iraq Body Count collates casualty figures based on reports from two media sources or government and NGO reports.

That's right. Blame the Westerners, not the terrorists.

Really??? What kind of an aesthetically correct numeral would depict the people dead if the Iraqis challenged Saddam on their own, thus precluding a Coalition intervention?

HOW MANY SADDAM AND HIS REGUIME KILLED??????

From what I have read on the subject, (civilian deaths alone, from '91 to end of Husseign regime )

400,000.. I personally think it is closer to 500,000, maybe more.. (the count goes up as more mass graves are found)

If you figure 10,000 since the occupation, we're only talking about 2-2.5% of what Saddam killed...

And, as mentioned earlier, we're not even talking about the estimated 1-1.5 million that died during the Iran-Iraq war..

This article is just more Liberal sensationalism...

Thanks for the correction...I couldn't recall the exact age and for some reason I thought it was in the twenties, but before I typed it, I though, "they werent that blatant, were they?"

I'm glad you remembered the details....I've tried to repress memories of the Clinton era....

If it weren't for us, they wouldn't be in Iraq killing Iraqis. So I guess that makes us responsible. If it weren't for us, maybe they'd be in Israel attacking Israelis, which is okay. (sarcasm)

An outstanding analysis; good debunking of left - wing twaddle. A fine example of why this site is my preferred news source...

HOW MANY SADDAM AND HIS REGIME KILLED??????

This article "In Iraq, Civilian Deaths Have Fallen Since the Start of the War" states that:

Documental Centre for Human Rights in Iraq has compiled documentation on over 600,000 civilian executions in Iraq. Human Rights Watch reports that in one operation alone, the Anfal, Saddam killed 100,000 Kurdish Iraqis. Another 500,000 are estimated to have died in Saddam's needless war with Iran. Coldly taken as a daily average for the 24 years of Saddam's reign, these numbers give us a horrifying picture of between 70 and 125 civilian deaths per day for every one of Saddam's 8,000-odd days in power.

That's based on the bogus Lancet Report that has been thoroughly "fisked" all over the internet. Sorry, but it don't fly.

And just who has been killing these Iraqi civilians? It sure isn't the U.S.

I'd bet the terrorists have killed more than the war has.

Indeed, why stop there? Why not make it 30,000,000? That way, more people will have died in Iraq than currently live there. I'm sure that the lemmings at D.U. would latch onto this figure quickly.

This is all politics. Human lives are cheaper than dirt for them. As far as they are concerned, Saddam could have killed 10 times as many people, and he would have if he had not been stopped by us (boy interrupted). Have they ever been able to prevent any genocide in the world, whether it be Ruwanda, Campuchea, Sudan or other places. While they whine and play counting games, the grown-ups do the man's job.

When Mao took China, he murdered 65 million Chinese civilians. I have yet to notice a liberal wringing his hands over that. In fact, liberals don't even mention it.

When Stalin murdered 20 million civilians, liberals either said nothing or sang Stalin's praises in the New York Times.

Liberals were also silent when the North Vietnamese overran the South and murdered 2 million, and when Pol Pot took over Cambodia and proceded to murder 1.5 million -- except for Hillary Clinton, who openly applauded Pol Pot on the floor of the UN General Assembly.

But when 10,000 Iraqi civilians die at the hands of terrorist fellow muslims, the liberals can't stop wailing about it and, of course, blaming it on George Bush.

I'd like to suggest that many of them are Saddam's ex-thugs who would have been killing Iraqis in Abu Graib prison.
