Air America Losing Audience to Limbaugh, Hannity
NewsMax ^ | 1/26/05 | Carl Limbacher

Air America, the liberal alternative to so-called "right wing radio," is "gaining traction" in key markets, a recent report in the Wall Street Journal claimed.

But according to a Jan. 17 report in Mediaweek, the network headlined by Al Franken, Janeane Garofalo and Randi Rhodes is actually losing listeners in its home base of New York City. The magazine reports that Al Franken's New York outlet WLIB "dropped from a 1.4 overall share to a 1.2" in the fall Arbitron ratings book.

Meanwhile New York's WABC, the flagship station of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, had its best ratings since 1994 with a 4.5 overall share.

The Journal went so far as to claim that Air America's Rhodes "is tied with conservative Sean Hannity for the talk-show host that listeners spent the most time with each week in the fall season."

Rhodes "points out that she reached that level after just a few months of national exposure, and without the television show and book Mr. Hannity has to boost his public profile."

But the New York Daily News reported recently that Hannity averaged 7.3 percent of the audience in the key month before the election, making him No. 1 in the city and marking the first time a WABC afternoon show had cracked 7 percent in nearly a decade.

In fact, a few weeks before Ms. Rhodes began boasting to the Journal, her boss at Air America was congratulating Hannity's home base.

"WABC is the story here," Air America President Jon Sinton told the News. "The huge billboard and TV campaign they did for Sean shows you the power of television and marketing for radio, and hats off to them. They got the numbers."

Savage is #1 is SF and Hannity is #17

I would guess the little they had up to this point was mostly curious onlookers. Like Freepers that occasionally check up on DU.

Err America is the reason for Rush and Sean's popularity. Once you listen to Err America (and don't barf) and then to R&S you will never come back but stay with WABC.
WLIB is barely heard outside of NYC. When you hear it, it is a picture of stupidity, childish whining and empty substance. Only real moron can stomach it for more than couple of minutes. Is Soros still paying for it?

People are waking up and don't trust the Liberal traditional media anymore.

The reason conservative news networks (Fox) and conservative talk-shows are taking over the ratings is simply that ...

... People are not dumb

They know when they listen and watch conservative shows that they are getting real news and fact-based opinion and Dan Rather is not there trying to spoon-feed them tripe and lies so that they vote Democrat.

The internet and sites like this one are helping. But the main reason is that ...

... People are smarter than the Liberals assume they are.

No, they were popular way before Err America and they will be popular long after lib radio is extinct.

All of the above pale in comparison to the "King of all Media"

"How can they lose what they never really had?"

By using the same logic that calls a reduction in growth a "spending cut".

The libs do not understand that it's their message that people turn off so that they may hear Sean, Rush, Michael Medved, Kirby Wilbur, Larry Elder, Michael Reagan, Michael Savage, Rusty Humphries, Glenn Beck, Laura Ingraham, etc., because we live in a conservative country with conservative values...:-)

For the first time ever, I happened to listen to almost 40 minutes of Air America on an off-brand station while driving through D.C. It was a "best of" program of someone I've never heard of. It was the most obnoxious 40 minutes of political radio that I've ever heard.

It was a cross between stupidity and bigotry. It was also highly juvenile. No grown-up should think that way, and should speak that way in public.

I also noted that the few advertisers they have are fly-by-twilight outfits selling the likes of homeopathic erectile dysfunction pills. In short, this is a class act from top to bottom. NOT.

selling the likes of homeopathic erectile dysfunction pills

How do these pills differ from those used to treat heteropathic erectile disfunction? Are they lavender? (Yes, I'm kidding.)

Even if you don't care for his brand of entertainment........

You must admit that he has changed entertainment forever.
