Cardinal Newman Society would have protested Hillary Clinton speaking at a Catholic college on health care, welfare, even tidily-winks. There just has to be a better choice to speak on any subject. But the queen of abortion rights speaking on the Corporal Works of Mercy? It's ludicrous!

HILLARY CLINTON TO SPEAK ON WORKS OF MERCY
Sen. Hillary Clinton, one of Washington's most vocal advocates of abortion rights (including partial-birth abortion), fetal stem-cell research, and funding for contraceptives, is scheduled to speak on Monday, January 31, at Canisius College on "The Governmental Role in Caring for the Sick." The lecture is part of a series on the Governmental Role in Effectuating the Corporal Works of Mercy. Co-sponsors of the event include Call to Action, Citizen Action of New York and labor unions.

VILLANOVA HONORS FACULTY MEMBER WHO KILLED BABY
On January 20, Villanova University dedicated a memorial to the former director of Villanova's Center for Arab and Islamic Studies in a lounge of the campus library. Despite receiving high marks for her teaching and scholarship, Mine Ener shocked the Villanova community when she was charged with second-degree murder for cutting the throat of her 6-month-old daughter with a kitchen knife in August 2003. Ener told police she wanted to end the baby's suffering from complications related to Down syndrome. A month later, Ener committed suicide while in jail awaiting trial. Although Ener's struggle with postpartum depression warrants sympathy, erecting a special memorial to her trivializes the crime and is highly insensitive to family members who lost a baby girl.

NEW YORK MEDICAL BANS HOMOSEXUAL CLUB
New York Medical College, which is affiliated with the Archdiocese of New York, has told students to disband a club titled Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People in Medicine. "New York Medical College retains the right to conform all policies, practices and procedures in a manner that preserves its rights, character and identity as a health sciences university in the Catholic tradition," reads a college statement. "The college will neither sponsor nor support an organization whose objectives are incompatible with our institutional values." The national Gay and Lesbian Medical Association has urged members to write to the college in protest -- sounds like the college could use some support.

SEATTLE PROFESSORS DEFEND ABORTION
Seattle University philosophy professors Daniel Dombrowski and Robert Deltete have authored a book entitled A Brief, Liberal, Catholic Defense of Abortion, in which they argue that the unborn child is not "a human person in some morally relevant sense" until very late in pregnancy when "sentience" begins, a term they use to define the capacity to perceive pain. In one part of the book, they go so far as to assert that performing an abortion on a "nonsentient" child is no more troublesome than mowing the lawn. Dombrowski and Deltete also argue that their pro-abortion position is "more compatible with Catholic tradition than the current anti-abortion stance defended by many Catholics and by most Catholic leaders," which rests on a "shaky foundation" and should be "altered or dropped."

GEORGETOWN HONORS PRO-ABORTION COLIN POWELL
Georgetown University president Jack DeGioia presented Secretary of State Colin Powell and his wife Alma the John Thompson Legacy of a Dream Award to honor their dedication to the vision of Martin Luther King, Jr., for social justice. "Dr. King fought this war not with weapons but with truth," Powell said. But Powell is an admitted advocate of abortion rights, a part of his platform for his failed 1988 presidential campaign. The honor violates the U.S. bishops' ban on Catholic honors to public abortion advocates.

O'CONNOR GIVES KEYNOTE ADDRESS AT GEORGETOWN
Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor was the keynote speaker during Georgetown University Law Center's dedication ceremony for its new Eric E. Hotung International Law Center Building in October. O'Connor wrote the Supreme Court's decision in Planned Parenthood vs. Casey in 1972, upholding the right to legalized abortion.

BOSTON COLLEGE CONSIDERS MERGER WITH WESTON
Boston College is exploring a merger with the Weston Jesuit School of Theology, a divinity school that prepares Jesuit and Capuchin priests. The consolidation would mean Weston would become part of a new school of theology and ministry at Boston College and would also bring a number of new theologians to the university -- not necessarily a good thing. Three Weston faculty members were investigated in recent years by the Vatican for writings which contradicted the Church's teaching on issues such as human sexuality. Weston also employs Rev. James Keenan, S.J., the priest who in 2003 testified before the Massachusetts state legislature to oppose a measure defining marriage as between a man and a woman. Keenan's temporary appointment as the Thomas I. Gasson, S.J., Chair for Jesuit scholars at Boston College expires this year, but a merger with Weston could keep him at the College indefinitely. Boston College President Rev. William Leahy, S.J., commented that "there will always be concerns over theologians. That comes with the 21st century world in which we live, and just as we've had issues with our own department of theology members, there may be issues in the future with Weston faculty members who come to BC, but we handle these things. It's not a concern."

DEPAUL PROFESSOR STUDIES STRIPTEASE
This is NOT why DePaul University is a respected research institution: Rachel Shteir, associate professor of dramaturgy and dramatic criticism, has authored a new book, Strippers: The Untold History of the Girlie Show. Shteir's research on female vaudevillians of the early 20th century led her to admire the theatricality of the striptease, Shteir told the Chronicle of Higher Education (12/10/04): "The stripper had a walk, and had to learn how to do that. And take off her clothes in a particular way." The book comes complete with photos of topless women.

SETON HALL LAWSUIT MAY REACH N.J. SUPREME COURT
Lawyers on both sides of a gay student's lawsuit against Seton Hall University for its refusal to formally recognize a homosexual student club told the Star-Ledger that the case may end up before the New Jersey Supreme Court. The suit, filed in March, is pending in an appellate court. "The Church teaches that an exclusive focus on a person's sexual orientation denies the fullness of human dignity and diminishes persons in a way that is both reductionist and marginalizing," wrote Laura Wankel, vice president of student affairs, in a December 2003 letter denying recognition to the student club.

REPORTS FIND POLITICAL BIAS AMONG PROFESSORS
Just weeks after Cardinal Newman Society reviewed Federal Election Commission reports and found a 9-to-1 ratio of gifts to John Kerry's presidential campaign over the Bush campaign among employees of the 10 largest Catholic universities, new reports confirm a clear political bias among America's college faculty members. Professors at the University of Santa Clara found that Democratic professors in the humanities and social sciences outnumber Republicans by at least 7-to-1, twice the gap that existed 30 years ago. The Center for Responsive Politics found that employee contributions to the Kerry campaign were significant among academics, with employees at the University of California system and Harvard University ranked as the largest donors per capita in the presidential race. Employees of the two institutions gave 19 times more money to the Kerry campaign than the Bush campaign.

FEC INVESTIGATES MICHAEL MOORE LECTURES
The Federal Election Commission (FEC) is investigating whether colleges violated a ban on corporate donations to political campaigns by paying lecture fees to filmmaker Michael Moore, who toured colleges encouraging students and professors to vote for presidential candidate John Kerry. Depending on its outcome, the FEC investigation could have implications for Catholic colleges, several of which hosted primarily pro-Kerry speakers before the November elections. At the very least, the investigation could motivate colleges to stop sponsoring overtly political events, according to Sheldon Steinbach, vice president and general counsel of the American Council on Education. "The utilization of speakers who are grossly partisan in the weeks before a national election in a university community that has gone to great lengths to mobilize students to register and vote can easily become a subject of inquiry," Steinbach told the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Good. Now maybe people will pay attention to the Spiritual Works of Mercy as well.
St. Columba of Iona, smash them all.
Beyond disgusting. It's even worse than if she had gone to a secular campus, where she wouldn't have been given the chance to "reposition" herself as a Christian.
she is just all over the place leaving her dropping. GOP had better keep a close eye on her, She got off the starting gate like a jack rabbit since opening of Clinton Lie-bary.
Everybody needs to take one minute and e-mail this idiot:

Are they going to have a 'response' from the WH staff members that worked for her? Billy Dale?
*song* "To Dream, The Impossible Dream..." *song* ..if she didn't, her head would explode...OTOH, Keep talking $hrillary.
Talk is cheap and she's full of it.
Corporal works of mercy -- eh?
OK, Hillary, what are they?
Unless you strive after virtues and practice them, you will never grow to be more than dwarfs. -- St. Theresa of Avila

Where's the barfing cankles alert? >>
Forgot about it, and it should be there.
For those not familiar with this term, these are the Seven Corporal Works of Mercy (taken from the words of Jesus to those who stand in judgment):
1. Feed the hungry.
2. Give drink to the thirsty.
3. Clothe the naked.
4. Shelter the homeless.
5. Visit the sick.
6. Ransom the captive.
7. Bury the dead.
