Depends on what you consider "inspiring". Personally, I thought that Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was an inspiring film, ending as it did with a unique twist on the ancient (but so true) proverb that it's "better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all". In the end, it is the memories of what so right in a relationship (or in life in general) that make it worth living, and you'll treasure the good times long after you've forgotten what petty BS you let ruin that relationship. You've always got those memories to help you through hard times (to create new memories in the future), which I found to be quite the life-affirming lesson.

Box office isn't the criteria that the Oscars use to judge pictures.

True... but you have to admit that this was one well crafted movie that all others like it from now will be judged by.

My longtime writers' group...half conservative, half Liberal...agree on one thing: they're nuts about Johnny Depp. Maybe this is his year. I don't go to movies, but have seen one or two early Depp films. He is talented,

Go search out one of his up and coming movies..."Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and watch clips from it. I though he was talented also until I saw that clip, hideous comes to mind (maybe his politics have finally started to affect his brain).

Fail Safe, though, is a great film.

It captures a moment in time-the height of the Cold War-that seems a bit dated now, but which makes for a great, suspenseful drama.

It's not as amusing as "Dr. Strangelove", but it definitely has its moments.

I've enjoyed quite a few of Frears works, though the last film of his that I saw, "Pretty Dirty Things", was quite bizarre. I figured out the twist half way through the film which shows it's overall shoddiness.
I'll give Leigh this, I hate Gilbert and Sullivan but I loved "Topsy Turvy".

"Topsy Turvy" was a great film.

Even if the acting left a lot to be desired, the score was fantastic!

Sorry, I stand corrected. we were discussing Schindler's List. I recently saw House of Sand and Fog and thought it was elegantly directed, and Kingsley is always enjoyable.

"TOPSY TURVY" was a masterfully done film,was 100% accurate (except for Gilbert's relationship with his wife),and even many of the traditional "bits" were executed with aplomb and panache.

One might ask the "Hollywood Insiders" on this thread the last time the highest grossing non scifi/childrens' film was not nominated for best picture? How about never? (The answer may be "Twister" #38 all time gross, 1996 - I'm not sure of its gross at the time of nominations).

I'm no big time Christian - but I do not like prejudice in any form. The omission of POTC from Best Picture and other major awards is a clear example of religious discrimination. Personally I would not accept an award from a group that discriminates like this.

The actor who played Sir Arthur has a lisp,which is distracting.I've seen him in other roles and he has the damned lisp,even when he puts on an Italian accent.

The actress who played Leonora Braham looks EXACTLY like Jessie Bond,whom she should have portrayed.Since I know what the original cast member looked like,I found this somewhat jarring,because my mind kept saying :WHAT'S JESSIE BOND DOING LEONORA'S ROLES?" But she's a really wonderful actress and I've seen her in many other things.

The ubiquitous Jim Broadbent did Gilbert wonderfully well,but I take great umbrage with the script's erroneous portrayal of how Gilbert's interaction (at the end of the film)with his wife.That was incorrect.

Durward Lely had dark hair,unlike the man who played him,but it worked nonetheless.

This wasn't the old D'Oyly Carte,but the cast did a remarkable job...really first rate and I am VERY picky and nit-picky about G&S!

Subtle in not a word I would normally attach to G&S. The phrase "too precious" is more like it. Lets just say I find nothing in their operettas that interest me.
