BLOOMBERG'S MISFIRE: BLAMING GUN MAKERS

BLOOMBERG'S MISFIRE: BLAMING GUN MAKERS

Mayor Bloomberg misfired recently when he signed a bill permitting crime victims to sue law-abiding, out-of-state gun makers unless they change their lawful sales and distribution practices by adopting the city's so-called "code of conduct" ("Mike Opens Fire on Gun Makers," Jan. 19).

The law is an unconstitutional attempt to regulate interstate commerce, something only Congress can do.

There already is a "code of conduct" for the firearm industry. It's called the Gun Control Act.

More importantly, this law will not reduce gun crime in the city.

The law's "code" is nothing more than the same gun-control measures the U.S. Center for Disease Control and the National Academy of Sciences both separately concluded have not been shown to reduce gun violence.

Lawsuits under the law will simply bankrupt law-abiding businesses by blaming them for the actions of criminals. Lawrence Keane

Is New York prepared to hold knife makers, automobile makers, fertilizer makers, tool makers, etc., responsible for the misuse of their products?

All of these objects are inanimate until someone uses them.

I would like to commend Councilman Andrew Lanza for voting against the recent batch of gun laws that the misguided City Council has inflicted on legitimate gun owners.

History has proven time and again that gun control does not work, and all the junk lawsuits brought against the gun industry have all been thrown out of court. Anthony Calabria

I'd love to see NY try to pass a law barring young black males from buying a gun. See how well that goes off.

Mayor Bloomberg should lead by example - disarm his personal security force...

Did'ya ever notice that when liberals defend abortion the first argument they raise is that it's legal, but never bring that point up when discussing tobacco or firearms?

He may have changed his party affiliation, but he sure didn’t change his liberal opinions.

If gun manufacturers would decline to make any future sales to NYC, including the police department and the security services which provide protection for the elites, that would just tickle me. Gunsmiths could also refuse all city service work.

There has to be a concerted effort to break these foolish politicians rather than to just try to work around their silly laws.

Do you suppose they'll sue Boeing for 9/11?

Not the best example. I would use pharmaceutical manufacturers. If grandma won't get her meds because some punks stole some pain pills in the supply chain and sold them, illegally, on the black market, then grandma, and perhaps the left, will get the drift about how bad laws like these are.

After all, it's not gun owners, knife owners and tool makers that are voting these jokers into office. It's grandma and her soon-to-be-menopausal daughter that's voting for these morons.

This is idiotic. THe manufactures have no idea how their tool will be used. I suppose now that if someone uses a car to run down someone, the grieving family members can sue Ford?

Hmmm.... he could hold the CRIMINALS liable for the havoc they wreak with gun.

Hmmm... then the trial lawyers could sue them, and they'd make a ton of money!

Wait a sec.... this might not work. A lot of the crooks are punks who don't have ten dollars to their name for more than an hour at a time.

So, forget that idea.

Rudy G. was the best mayor of NY since Manhattan was settled by the Dutch 300 years ago.
