Olympic marathon priest vows to ignore Vatican defrocking
Evening Echo ^ | Mon, Jan 24, 2005

The Irish priest who disrupted the Olympic marathon last year has vowed to ignore the Vatican's decision to remove him from the priesthood.

Neil Horan, a native of Kerry who lives in London, sparked outrage last summer when he accosted the Brazilian athlete who was leading the Athens marathon.

He had previously run out in front of 200mph Formula One cars at the British Grand Prix in Silverstone to highlight his belief that the second coming of Jesus is nigh.

Horan had not carried out official church duties since 1994 and was formally defrocked by Pope John Paul II yesterday.

However, responding this morning, he said: "I told them I was refusing to accept their decree and, as far as I'm concerned, nothing has changed. I'm still a Catholic priest in the eyes of Jesus Christ."

Damn shame one didn't hit him.

At least Catholic nuts don't cut off people's heads or tie a bomb to themselves...

Why did he do this? To get attention about the second coming?

Is his defrocking an official statement that the Vatican does not believe the second coming is nigh?

This guy belongs with the Snake Handling Rollers, not the Catholics, he just doesn't know it.

He may be a nut, but he's got faboulous taste in clothes. Those green knee socks are to die for.

Too bad he didn't molest some teenage boys. The bishops would have just shifted him to another parish.

Um, he WAS defrocked for pedophilia (of girls, not boys), but thanks for the ignorance.

Something is missing from the article. WHY did he "accost" someone running a marathon race? You don't bring attention to the coming of Christ by trying to make a jerk out of yourself!

Um, I guess I was basing my comment on having read the entire article you posted (which fails to mention any other reason for his defrocking). But thanks for being a jackass.

Who cares what this nutcase considers himself?

The RCC isnt paying him a wage or giving him any responsibilities in the church, no?

He is obviously in the paint-peanutbutter-on-himself-naked-and-dance-in-the-full-moon category.

At least now everyone knows he is wacked in the head.

Rushing to judgement based on stereotypes is more of a jackass move, don't you think?

And he thinks this makes him special in the Saviour's eyes? The Lord is much more concerned with what you do, not fancy titles. (Especially titles that you besmirch)

Perhaps, but I never "judged" this former priest, much less rushed somewhere in so doing. If you are saying that bishops in the U.S. haven't moved pedophile priests to avoid responsibility for their crimes, you are as ignorant as you are rude.

That's a very simplistic understanding of the problem. The priests weren't moved, because the bishops felt that nobody was beyond redemption. I don't agree with that opinion, but it had nothing to do with avoiding responsiblity. BTW, statistically Catholic priests are FAR less likely to commit pedophilia than the male population in general.

It should not matter if he is Catholic or Protestant, the fact is that he is a lunatic, and should be in jail. Making snide remarks about your Christian brethren shows just how narrow-minded you are. Who are you, or I, or anyone else to judge others?

No, they shoot people in the knees, and park bomb-filled cars in front of pubs.

You WERE talking about Irish Catholics like this fellow, weren't you?
