Only eight hours after the Pearl Harbor bombing, Japanese bombs leveled Manila and military targets on the main island of Luzon. After four long months for the under-prepared Allied forces in the Philippines, U.S. forces had no choice but to surrender.
So, if you get a chance check to see if you get the channel (those in the greater KC area who use Time Warner, the channel is 224) if you do not then contact your cable/satallite business office requesting that they add it to your line up.
Tonight they will air:
Special Forces: Hellweek
For 24 hours a day, six days in a row, students are put through a demanding set of obstacles designed to test their resolve and commitment. Each test is followed by a harder one that pushes the psychological limits of even the toughest men.
Virgin Soldiers
Monday, Jan. 24, at 10 p.m.
With unprecedented access, award-winning filmmaker Dodge Billingsley tells the story of India Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, crack US frontline troops in Iraq.
With some as young as 19, the invasion of Iraq was the first time any of them had actually been sent into combat.
Having joined up with the regiment two months before they went into battle and watched them train and prepare for war, Dodge was able to experience first-hand the fears, hopes, black humor and occasionally humdrum day-to-day life of these young men as they played a vital role in the Iraq war.
With remarkable footage of battles with the Iraqi 32nd Mechanized Brigade and the destruction of the infamous Salman Pak military complex and various Republican Guard bases, Virgin Soldiers reveals the true story of the men who fought their way into the heart of Baghdad.
With the weather like it is, it might be fun to make a bowl of popcorn, sit infront of the fire and watch the military channel. Just a thought.
new military channel **PING**
And the story of their rescue...Ghost Soldiers...best book I've ever read. Hope I get this channel soon. Thanks for the heads up.
For reasons to be investigated I don't think I can get the Military Channel. The popcorn sounds like a good idea.
Great! People have been talking about this for a long time.
Not offered on Cox Cable here yet. Sounds like it's time to harass them though.
RLTW, I had heard 'Ghost Soldiers' was going to be made a movie, but I guess the opening scene was too unPC to show.
and now you can go to Cabanatuan and get a MdDonald's hamburger (Not a joke: It's the nearest McDonald's to where we live in the Phiippines).
Anyone hear if the movie "ghost soldiers" is still being made or being released?
I am sure you saw this link but that I would send it the thread just in case, and the search does work, it did bring up our cable thugs.
If you had Dicovery Wings you should be getting Military Channel as they changed Wings to this. I have not been watching it much but I think I seen everything Wings had on until they started those airport series things and I stoped watching it much.
The poster may have used the source page and then posted it on FR. Sometimes it arrives just fine on Free Republic other times, the links just revert back to Free Republic. It might be just as easy to post the link, just a thought.
Sorry if they don't allow hot links or whatever. Go the page to see the info on the film made from Hamtom Sides' book.
On a side note there is this interesting post on the message boards for this movie:
I dont know how many of you know the truth about this film as I do. I attended the Premier of the film in Bozeman, MT back in September at Hatch Fest. First off this is a horrible movie and there is no way it could possibly be even considered for oscars or globes. Second the fact that it was premiered In 2004 means that the only awards it could be elgible for would be this years. Also this movie originally was supposed to come out back in October or something AND THE REASON IT HAS BEEN PUSHED BACK TO MARCH IS BECAUSE THEY DIDN"T WANT TO HELP BUSH GET RE-ELECTED. Miramax is very liberal and anti Bush and this film does do a good job with some Conservative ideas and glorifying fighting for the American cause. so that is why it was pushed back and I know this because at the Hatch Fest where they premiered this film they held several discussion panels and in one of those film panels it was stated that this was the reason for the delay.
Food for thought.
Weren't Spielberg and Hanks working on this project? I seem to remember....something smelly.
Yeah, WWII was such a "quagmire." How did we ever manage? /sarc
"Fresh off their collaboration on the just-wrapped sci-fi thriller Minority Report, the director and Hollywood's other big Tom, Tom Cruise, are already itching to team again. The two Tinseltown titans are planning to enlist in the gritty World War II drama Ghost Soldiers, Daily Variety reports."
What happened?
I don't know. I can't seem to find any other info. Just the stuff available at IMDB.
MacArthur bungled in the first hours, but that wasn't the only reason for the failure. 90% of US air power wasn't destroyed in the first raid on Clark Field. It took several days of raids to get to that point. The Air Corps just didn't learn to run dispersed operations and protect their airfields until losses had become crippling.
The truth is that the entire organization of the US Army Air Corps in the islands was unprepared, inexperienced, and as a result incompetent. What happened on Dec. 8 was rather a revelation that USAFFE had perhaps 10% of the strength it thought it did.
An excellent detailed history of the air campaign, almost aircraft-by-aircraft and mission-by-mission, is "Doomed at the Start" by William Bartsch.
