CAMP LIBERTY, Iraq — It was 3 o’clock on a January morning when a convoy of Stryker vehicles rolled out of this protected American base near the main Baghdad airport. The discovery of 27 bodies on a part of Haifa Street, a meandering road that also goes through the Green Zone or, as it is now called, International Zone, meant it was time to help the Iraqis take back what has been called one of Baghdad’s meanest and toughest areas, a place, according to news reports, even henchmen of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein avoided. Sgt. Holly Jensen of the...

Only eight hours after the Pearl Harbor bombing, Japanese bombs leveled Manila and military targets on the main island of Luzon. After four long months for the under-prepared Allied forces in the Philippines, U.S. forces had no choice but to surrender.

The Military Channel is reporting for duty. It's the newest spinoff cable channel from Discovery Networks, which next week converts its Wings channel to The Military Channel, the nation's first TV network devoted to all things military. The switch, which will take place officially at 8 p.m. (20:00 in military time) on Monday, Jan. 10, will be reflected in new logos and graphics, as well as new programming. The new channel will take up residence on Time Warner Cable's digital tier at Ch. 112, the current home of Discovery Wings. The Military Channel's first show will be "Task Force...
  • Discovery Network to Launch The Military Channel

Shortly after US bombs started dropping on Baghdad in late March 2003, Tim Goodman, the San Francisco Chronicle's television critic, quoted Paul Saffo, a "technology forecaster," who predicted that "It's just a matter of time before we have the War Channel." It took nearly twenty months, but an enterprising network has finally warmed to the idea: Recognizing that the war against terrorism is, as Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld put it over a year ago, a "long, hard slog," Discovery Communications International (DCI) will give the American public a front row seat by re-launching its six-year-old Discovery Wings Channel as...

Continuing a campaign to overhaul its lesser U.S. cable networks, Discovery Networks U.S. is renaming military-themed Discovery Wings as the Military Channel. The network is one of the original Discovery digital networks launched in 1998 to soak up some of the shelf space cable systems created when they started compressing part of their signals. Now that distribution of those networks has exceeded 30 million, Discovery is paying more attention to programming and marketing those channels. The Military Channel adopts the name of a failed cable network that went bankrupt in 1999 and ultimately liquidated its library of military films and...
