Robber pulls gun at Bowie store, but worker is quicker on the draw (Texas abductor shooting)

About 6 a.m. Friday, investigators say, Williams pulled into the Mountain View RV Park in Bowie driving Holden's pickup truck. He went inside a convenience store on the property where he pulled out a gun and demanded money, said Carol Capas, a spokeswoman for the Cochise County Sheriff's Department.

"He said, 'This is robbery. I want all the money in the cash register,' " store worker Richie Chapman said. "And as he said that, he drew a weapon from underneath his shirt, and I drew and fired."

"If he had gotten a shot off, I would have been dead," said Chapman, a retired New York firefighter who carries a .45-caliber automatic. "And I have no qualms about it, that I think he would have shot me."

Chapman "felt threatened, and pulled out his own gun and shot the man one time," Capas said.

Investigators said Williams ran to the truck and drove away. A short time later, as he traveled east on Interstate 10, Williams pulled over and began flagging down passing motorists.

When deputies arrived at the area where Williams was flagging down motorists, they were told by someone that the man had driven himself to Northern Cochise Community Hospital in Willcox.

Capas said Williams was treated at the hospital before being released to FBI agents Friday.

Even in the Bolshevik paradise of Tucson, nobody messes with our right to strap on a holster and gun.

I'll bet the ex-cop smelled trouble as soon as Williams came in the store, and had his hand on his sidearm before Williams started pulling his out.

Williams will be tried in Texas. Odds are, he will get the death penalty.

Yes --- from the picture posted above, he doesn't look like a typical RV'er.

Too bad --- it's so sad what happened to the poor Walmart clerk --- the terror of her last moments.

Give him a fair trial followed by a quick execution.

It's a shame he only fired once.

MSNBC is making a big deal about how this guy is an ex-Marine, and how he has had so many problems adjusting to civilian life because of all the violence he saw in Iraq.

I almost puked.

Then I got mad and dropped MSNBC an e-mail raising hell about the way they are reporting this story. It's wrong to give this animal any cover, especially at the expense of Honorable Marines who are serving thier Country Honorably.

I went to high school with a guy who turned out to be a mass murderer. He has since been executed, but the impact on his family was terrible. The killer's brother was a friend of mine...they were shamed, depressed. I wonder what ever happened to them....

Practice is good - you need to go to automatic. But I have studied shootouts for many years going back to the legends of the Old West. Deliberate movements go further than anything IMHO. Wyatt Earp (think what you will of him) was in many a shootouts and never even nicked. Most witness reports say he drew his weapon and took deliberate aim, often after the other guy was already shooting. His legend also worked for him.

In the one shootout I was in at a convenience store the perp had killed the clerk and was waving his gun around movie style. I drew my brother's 44 mag from the glove box of the car and took aim and shot the dirt bag. Missed dead center by 4 inches and did not have time for second shot since he went right down. 16 year old kid with a rap sheet three inches deep. Cops wanted to know why I didn't finish him off. Told them angle was wrong and they all said "Not a problem." My action was very deliberate - at that time by accident more than anything. My brain kept screaming "WTF" if you know what I mean. Dirtbag killed a clerk who had a family and was a friend of mine for $40 and an armload of smokes.

In retrospect I tell everyone who wants to carry that you had better have THE WILL to shoot. It is really embarrassing to have your gun taken away and be shot with it. IF you have even a small thought of "Could I pull the trigger?" then don't carry.

I knew people that came home from Iraq and had problems adjusting. If you can witness battle and not be scarred, you're not right to begin with. HOWEVER, none of them took their issues out on 19 year old strangers.

"Too bad the clerk didn't do a double-tap."

Always do a double-tap! Saves a lot of money and trouble.

This ex-firefighter being from NYC, however, he probably had it in his mind that it would be "excessive use of force".

He was hit in the shoulder, but I have to think it must only have grazed him. I can't imagine that it was a solid hit.

That would be hard. It's not always the fault of the family --- good families can produce killers.

That's the best advice I've read from someone who knows.

Thanks!

***Perfectly acceptable terminology***

Yes that term is used, but but all due respect - it shouldn't be. I'm sick and tired (and we all should be) of gun ignorant 'journalists' spewing anti gun tripe and incorrect tripe at thats, as in...

  1. He emptied 'the clip'.
    It AIN'T A 'clip', it's a magazine.

  2. 'Hi-powered' rifle.
Now WTF is that supposed to mean?!? What's a 'low-powered' rifle? I have a 9mm Carbine, is that low-powered or hi-powered? Never mind, to these 'jounalists, its an "assault rifle". Plus any hunting rifle is "hi-powered". A freaking .22 Magnum is 'hi-powered'.

  3. Semi-Automatic "revolver"
That's usually spewed by a female 'journalist'

  4. 'Chrome plated' (revolver-pistol).
Uh can you say "NICKLE" you morons.

  5. And the always irritating... 'Assault Rifle'.
To these 'journalists' almost any rifle with a "pistol grip" is an 'Assault Rifle' And any rifle that 'looks scary' definitely is one to them. It could shoot BB's and they'd STILL call it an 'Assault Rifle'. Never mind that 'Assault Rifles' are fully automatic, that's just a minor FACT to be ignored.

  6. Then there's the, "the assailant used/had an 'AK-47' "
These jackasses DON'T know an AK-47, from an SKS OR an AK-74. And many times the follow up article has a correction like the bad guy actually had a Shotgun!

So it might be 'acceptable', but not me. These 'journalists' are not posting on Blogs where they're constrained by time (like they have to get back to work) and thus have to omit a few 'assumed knowns' by those reading it.

Ergo, get it right or don't write about the subject.
