Woman who died with bear guru was duped.(Treadwell, environut)

For 16 months since Amie Huguenard and Timothy Treadwell died in the jaws of a bear at Kaflia Bay on the Katmai Coast, I have been waking up at night with thoughts of this 37-year-old Midwestern woman I never knew.

I can't get free of the words in an e-mail from an old boyfriend, sent months after Huguenard's death.

"Amie had a kind of naivete about her that added a real sweetness to her entire persona,'' Stephen Bunch wrote. "At times it was easy to convince her of things that were not entirely true. We would let her in on these jokes and get a good laugh, especially from her.

"Sometimes I found this quality frustrating because I would watch her 'swallow the hook, line and sinker' in situations where it was obvious what was going on. But I always felt I could trust her because she bestowed the same trust in you unconditionally.''

The last person Amie Huguenard trusted was Treadwell, and it led to her death in the jaws of a bear.

Ever since, she has been billed as Treadwell's "partner" in the tragedy. Early reviews of "Grizzly Man,'' a Treadwell film set to air at the Sundance Film Festival later this month, describe her that way or as the "girlfriend'' following Treadwell on his quest to "leave the confinements of his humanness and bond with the bears.''

That's a novel idea -- and one that is so much bunk.

If I was going to use something like the 45/70, I would go to the new 44mag. carbine Ruger makes. You can keep shooting the bear. I don't really remember how close the ballistics are on the two. Seems like the 45/70 had a 300 grain bullet and the .44 mag had a 230 grain but had a little more velocity. Its been a while since I looked at that stuff. But being able to keep pulling the trigger is nice.

The 8 was still there in 97 on my final "farewell" tour.

Your successors had a bar in their barracks on Red Cloud with a large picture over the bar of a Korean farmer who had found something unpleasant the hard way. It was captioned simply, "I meant a Bud light..."

A .22 pistol is all you need for bear protection.

Use it to kneecap your partner and run like hell.

The SAW is 5.56mm. It is the volume of fire and the ballistics of the round that make it useful against "soft" targets. The M-240B, on the other hand, is 7.62mm and offers a nasty punch.

This is an M-79.

These were used quite a bit in Viet Nam. Not a much recoil as you might think.

The 8th was a great unit. One of the best years of my life. I wonder if it was the original bar we make back in 68? Did they still have the little red bombs with everybody's name on them, plus a few little white bombs of EOD guys that ended up like the farmer?

Hey, now. Knock off the insults. This girl has a great personality. Would I be showing her off here if she didn't?

One of the professors in my department speaks highly of the M-79. He said it was a great gadget for clearing charlie from riverbanks.

Now that is one homely weapon. I can see where whatever recoil occured after the initial recoil at the first sight of that piece, would seem very minor by comparision.
