With an ailing Chief Justice William Rehnquist administering the oath of office, Thursday's inauguration will provide a stark reminder that President Bush soon could be embroiled in what promises to be one of the biggest fights of his presidency.

Seriously ill with thyroid cancer, the 80-year-old Rehnquist is widely expected to retire this year, giving Bush his first chance to shape the direction of a closely divided Supreme Court and leave a lasting imprint on a host of contentious social issues.

Souter was a new federal judge in Boston when President George H.W. Bush nominated him in 1990. His supporters assured Republicans that he would be a solid conservative, but Souter instead has proven to be one of the court's most forceful liberal voices--even more liberal than Bill Clinton appointee Stephen Breyer

We have a Thread Poll running somewhat related to this thread. It asks...Did the Senate Republican leadership make a mistake by giving the Senate Judiciary Committee chairmanship to Arlen Specter?

The thread is here http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1325177/posts See post 10.

The direct poll link is here

Souter was a new federal judge in Boston when President George H.W. Bush nominated him in 1990. His supporters assured Republicans that he would be a solid conservative,

Souter was recommended to Bush #41 by his then chief of staff John Sununu. When Sununu had been gov. of NH, Souter was on some higher state court. A case came before him where one of the plaintiffs was the state govt. Souter decided for the govt, thus giving a win to the GOP administration of Sununu, who was then convinced that Souter was a reliable GOP-leaning judge.

I understand that Souter still does cast some votes on the conservative side of economic / business / labor issues, though he has a 100% liberal record on cultural issues. Not all that different from a Libertarian.

Still, all in all, I picture him as a Liberal rather than a Libertarian.

In our prayers we need to ask God to bring us great new Justices as needed.

Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi are skating to judicial victory with a sense of euphoria?

I think not.

With the Republicans in Congress , Spector handing key staff positions to Naacp people with access to all Republican files ,there will be no fight .The republicans will appoint all left wing judges to the bench and tell us we just want to get along . What a bunch of saps ,I should just have voted Democrat at least they have Balls ,the conservatives are Pansies

How touchingly brave it was for Justice Rehnquist not only to be there to fulfill his duties, but to walk the stairs to do it. And his voice was amazingly audible for one who had a tracheotomy just weeks ago. God bless this good man for what he's done for our country through the years.

G.H.W Bush's mistake in appointing David Soter was to choose someone without a track record. He didn't want a paper trail but when that happens - you don't know if he's really a lib. Here's to hoping President Bush will not repeat that mistake in his Supreme Court appointments.

If you want to find a conservative on a State Court or a gator in a local lake, you shouldn't search for such critters in New England.

Democrap obstructionism in the Senate has fallen under the radar, and we know the lamestream media whores won't report it straight, spinning every chance they get to support the democraps in their liberal agenda for America. Look for the renewing of this onerous methodology as the leftist democrap party of clintonian amorality fights to continue secularization/liberalization of the Republic.

Frist will give little or no resistence but he will try to convince Americans that he's fighting gallantly. Humbug on him and his Republican colleagues as they allow themselves to be herded by the leftist democraps in the House and Senate. I hate to add, our President may use the obstructionism to go in a direction of compromise which leaves the unborn little ones still vulnerable to the evil 'choice to hire serial killers' and embryo aged humans a source of tissues for treating older humans ... the conservatism of this gang of Republican leaders is more smoke and mirrors, to avoid conflict, IMHO.

I, for one, will watch carefully to see the actions rather than listen to the smoke and mirrors rhetoric of the Frists of the government.

"...I should just have voted Democrat..."

No, NEVER ever vote Democrat for congress or senate unless the person is to the right of the Republican running and has a record to prove it. I agree with your assessment of what we're going to get as far as S.C. judges are concerned but that's because we have Rinos that we need to get rid of along with liberal Democrats. I don't think that Frist has 51 votes to stop the Democrats from fillibustering nominees who are conservative or he would have set new rules in the senate on the first day. What p.o.'s me is even if he doesn't have the votes, I want them on record so we can see who can't be counted on in our ranks and needs to replaced with a reliable Republican vote.
