Boston terror threat probed
Boston Herald ^ | January 19, 2005 | Tom Farmer and Michele McPhee

Posted on 01/19/2005 1:44:33 PM PST by RWR8189

Federal and state authorities are investigating a nuclear terrorist threat against Boston after a man calling from Mexico told California police that he smuggled two Iraqis and four Chinese over the border, the Boston Herald has learned.

``They got a call from across the border in Mexico to the California Highway Patrol and he said he brought two Iraqis and four Chineses (individuals)across the border and according to him, they stated soon to follow behind them would be some sort of material,'' said a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation.

``He refers to some sort of nuclear material that will follow them through New York up into Boston.''

According to the source, the caller has not identified himself and did not show up for a meeting with federal investigators in California but he did leave pictures of four Chinese men and some names at a ``drop'' site at the Mexico-California border.

``They were dropped by the source at a location. He literally threw them over a fence from Mexico to the U.S. side,'' said the source. ``There are pictures of the four Chinese and some names but just how accurate they are remains a question''

Massachusetts law enforcement officials were notified of the threat at 5:30 a.m. today through the FBI and Boston Police Joint Terrorist Task Force.

The threat was serious enough that Mayor Menino ordered the Fire Commissioner and the state's Homeland Security Chief into his office at City Hall, where they met with officials from the CIA, FBI, and Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, a high-ranking city official told the Herald.

``They are desperately trying to piece it together,'' said the offial, who added that if the threat is real it is ``very scary.''

A company that trains explosive-sniffing dogs said it was alerted that the canines would be searching for a ``dirty bomb,'' a New York City law enforcement official said yesterday.

The Massachusetts investigator said much of the man's information sounds far-fetched and investigators have some doubts about the caller's validity because he has not identified himself.

``A lot of it doesn't make sense and some of it does,'' said the source. ``It's totally uncorroborated. This all began several days ago as a series of phone calls and they don't know who the caller is. There are some parts of it that just don't make sense and other little pieces of it that fall into place. The information is these people that came into the country are going to New eYork into Boston and the (nuclear) material will follow them.''

The source said there is speculation the caller may have been ripped off by illegal immigrants he helped over the border and is now trying to exact revenge.

``It's very weird. Even if (the Iraqis and Chinese) were going to do something why would they be blabbing to the yahoo smuggling them across the border? You have to wonder if they screwd him on a deal but you have to treat it seriously and the issue is how do you put it out to the public and not get everybody (in a panic)?''

The source said the information will soon ``come out over police channels and BOLOs (be on the lookout).''

The source added the FBI office in San Diego is leading the investigation. ``The FBI in San Diego is the originating office so they are driving the investigation. The FBI in Boston is in a tough position because they are waiting for information''

The caller has not given investigators any means to contact him.

``They tried to set up a meet with him but he didn't show up.''

No one forgot to tell the Chechnyans.

The Chechnyans have the advantage of years of neglect by the Russians and have a large population inside Russia also that they hide among.

The Russian security problems with Chechnya would be far worse without their border security.

I once knew a man who smuggled Bibles into Russia when it was the Soviet Union. He spoke of the huge difficulties getting anything into Russia despite its large borders.

He simply could not drive up and get waved through after a cursory inspection (if that)as happens to most people coming into the US over the Mexican border.

" people shilling for union special interests "

You can forget that one. The AFL-CIO contributes heavily to MALDEF.

MALDEF is for people who are already HERE. They pretend to embrace Amnesty, because they are a liberal group dependant on all workers to maintain power. But if they were really such champions of open borders, they wouldn't be such outspoken critics of NAFTA, because theoretically they have no stake in individual companies.

Chechnya was one example. People and goods are brought into Russia over countless other borders. Finnland. Afganistan. China. Ukraine. As a matter of fact, now that Ukraine is asserting its independence, I question wether ANY of Russia's borders can be considered closed. And you can drive a car from the countries of Russia's enemies all the way to Moscow. Meanwhile, our enemies live across vast oceans.

" And you can drive a car from the countries of Russia's enemies all the way to Moscow. Meanwhile, our enemies live across vast oceans."

Which is exactly why our borders should be even easier to secure.

So lets do it!

Russia's borders are not secure. There is no reason to secure our other than to help unions artificially inflate wages.

"I don't need to guess on this one, come on RS, neither do you. They spoke out against Islam...were threatened, then slaughtered in Islamic Tradition."

Terrorism is to terrorise, not to kill a few people - Without this being listed on FR, I would never have heard about it. Are you telling me that terrorists have beome so amateurish now that they have lost the concept of publicity for their cause ?

Russia's borders are far more secure than ours.

And this is about preventing nukes from being exploded in our cities; it is NOT about 'bidnismin' making another nickel by importing cheap labor.

What are the odds of getting caught on the Mexican Border, 1 in 10 ? 1 in 20 ?

What are the odds of getting caught on the Canadian border with professional forgeries, or documents procured under false names which are NOT on the watch lists ?

Given enough money and resources, do you think you could figure a way in with much less then a 1 in 20 of being snagged ?

From a practical standpoint, it is impossible to smuggle nuclear material across the border, due the requirements for safely encasing it. To get it here, the terrorists would HAVE to use a shipping container.

Follow the dollar. These people hate eachother because they compete directly with eachother. God is secondary. It gives them an excuse to act.

Just keep on whistling past the grave yard. You are just like many status-quo-addicted Brits, French and Americans during the 1930s. In total denial. And I am a "drastic warmonger," like Churchill. Good day!

LOL, havent you been keeping up with current events, bubba?

They have been using SUICIDE bombers all over the globe, what on Earth makes you think that they would have aproblem getting this stuff through because of safety concerns?

Good greif, wake up!

I am a Churchill Warmonger. You are an hysteric. Winston was anything BUT an hysteric. China has been unable to do anything about a rogue province located 100 miles off its shore for over fifty years. They can threaten us in no way but nuclear. For now, MAD means that they won't. Eventually, it will mean that they can't. But if worrying matters of no consequence is what gets you out of bed in the morning, more power to you.

I refuse to go round and round on this with you. This is the third time I've pointed out that it has nothing to do with their willingness to die that I am referring to. It is the fact that direct contact with enough radioactive material to make such a bomb would KILL THEM IN FIFTEEN OR SO MINUTES. Ever see the movie K-19. Just like that. They'd never MAKE it across theborder. And any lead container strong enough to protect them would need to be moved by forklift and heavy truck. Other countries have looked at dirty bombs before and dismissed them for this reason. They are impractical science fiction.

That's it, I'm done arguing with fools on this subject. Either you get it you don't.

Wow! I must have been on line too long yesterday because I misread your lead line as: "Boston Terrier Threat Probed".
I tried to reply then and was informed the thread was pulled! And here you are again today. Anyway, I was greatly relieved to learn that Boston Terriers were not a problem after all. LOL!

Hey this is your raw nerve, not mine. I advocate taking a hard line against a Communist country with nuclear weapons and a mutual defense pact with Russia. No amount of money I have made from moving factories to the PRC, no amount of money you have made from it, nor money made by Joe Blow from it, will change my mind. Never show weakness to Communists, and defeat them.

LOL, of course they could sheild it enough to allow them to live long enough to get it across the border. This false dichotomy you create is transparent.

If you want to take your toys and go home, fine by me.

But the open borders are a security breach to our antion and need to be placed under control NOW!

Part of the reason we defeated the Eastern Block was because the people discovered capitalism. The same thing will happen in China. Communism does not work as a long-term economic policy. Meanwhile my raw nerve is people who see a terrorist threat at the Mexican border because idiots like Michael Savage tell them to. Those who worry about China militarily are too dumb to realize that they'd have to swim here to attack us. And, I hate to break it to you, but the Russians have always hated them more than we do. If they were going to attack anybody, it'd be Russia. China has next to no natural resources. Russia has more than we do and is weaker. Money is the only reason any other country besides the USA would ever be willing to go to war.
