Jury Awards Fired Calif. Cop $1.6M (CA cop skewered by videotape in media in 2002)

A former Inglewood, Calif., police officer who was fired for punching a black teenager and slamming him against a patrol car in an incident that was captured on videotape was awarded $1.6 million Tuesday by the jury in a discrimination lawsuit he and his partner brought against the city.

The jury voted 11-1 in favor of the verdict for Jeremy Morse, said defense attorney Gregory Smith. He said the jury was unanimous in awarding $810,000 to Morse's partner, Bijan Darvish, who had been disciplined in connection with the 2002 incident.

"This is not the first time police officers have been trapped in race situations where they suffered unfairly," Smith said in a phone interview after the verdict was read. "This will have an impact in police departments across the country."

Morse, 27, said he was very happy with the verdict.

He had previously faced a charge of assault, but a judge dismissed it in February 2004 after two juries deadlocked. A jury acquitted Darvish of filing a false report.

A bystander videotaped Morse in July 2002 punching handcuffed Donovan Jackson in the head and slamming him onto a patrol car in Inglewood, just south of Los Angeles.

It's a good result. It make make the city less ready to side with the criminal and his apologists.

Yep, a good result. I don't know how many people remember this incident, but for awhile there, the usual hustlers were trying to make it into another Rodney King riot situation.

GOOD! I was living in Los Angeles (Claremont) back when that happened. It sure made major news. I always thought there was a good reason for why the kid was handled roughly. I know that I have never been cuffed, etc., but I would behave if stopped by cops.

Wasn't this the one were the suspect supposedly grabbed the cops privates while in cuffs? If so, he deserved the slam.

Sweet. IMO Officer Morse showed amazing restraint under the circumstances

Yep. However, everyone should notice the irony here. He and his partner won a DISCRIMINATION lawsuit.

IMO Police Officers have one of the toughest jobs there is. Especially big city Police Officers who have to deal with the dregs of society day in and day out.

People in cities aren't receiving lessons from their parents about respect for other people and property, so when the Police have to deal with them they just act like a product of their environment. Deal with that everyday and I'm sure the slam on the car just becomes another way to get peoples attention and let them know that their attitude needs to change.

This thug wants to get cute and grab someones cojones? Well, if all he got was a slam on the car then he got off easy.

I have a friend I've known since we were 6 years old who is a Police Officer. Growing up you would never have found a more disciplined person, and someone who was first in line if someone needed help. He's still that way, but he doesn't let human garbage walk all over him. If he has to make a point, he does it convincingly, and he also says that if it ever comes down to him not going home to his family or a punk, he's not going to be the one carried out with a blanket over his head.

I think Police Officers deserve the same thanks and support we have for our Military.

the idiot (i.e., the camera guy) only showed the footage that he wanted the MSM to see. The prior scene of the kid grabbing the officer's n*t wasn't shown. Good thing is that the jurors saw it differently after watching the whole footage from the release of the tape, though.

Both cops were vindicated in this case. While these are not huge jury awards as today's civil cases go, both will at least have enough money to help them start new lives. It may not be total justice, but it's still good.

Yep.

Good training though. If assaulted in ones privates, keep hands low, reach, grab, crush and twist. Repeat until perp becomes reasonable and polite. Then, request perp sing entire score from OKLAHOMA!

I'm glad he got out of this. Maxine will not be happy. Also, too bad the settlement is coming from the taxpayers pockets.

Darn straight!
If some punk started grabbing MY testicles while being handcuffed, he'd be very lucky if bouncing off the pavement or car trunk and getting punched were ALL he received.

Shouldn't their damages be capped?
