LTC Tim Ryan is Commander, Task Force 2-12 Cavalry, First Cavalry Division in Iraq. He led troops into battle in Fallujah late last year and is now involved in security operations for the upcoming elections. He wrote the following during "down time" after the Fallujah operation. His views are his own.

My son called this morning from Iraq and said the same thing. He's only been there a little over two weeks and sees and hears for himself how much good is being done, but not reported.
Thanks for posting this article. I have some libs to e-mail it to.

As a recent example, the operation in Fallujah delivered an absolutely devastating blow to the insurgency. Though much smaller in scope, clearing Fallujah of insurgents arguably could equate to the Allies' breakout from the hedgerows in France during World War II. In both cases, our troops overcame a well-prepared and solidly entrenched enemy and began what could be the latter's last stand. In Fallujah, the enemy death toll has exceeded 1,500 and still is climbing. Put one in the win column for the good guys, right? Wrong. As soon as there was nothing negative to report about Fallujah, the media shifted its focus to other parts of the country.

What a great piece.

Pity no one will ever read it.

Print and video journalists are covering only a fraction of the events in Iraq and, more often than not, the events they cover are only negative.

So true. I don't rely on the legacy media for info on Iraq, nor for much else, now that I think about it.

I got back in AUG last year. It was the same then with the media. I can even tell you the hotels he's “probably” talking about.

Palestine Sheraton hotel complex. That is where CNN and the others stayed when I was there.

The demonstrations were always in front of the hotels. I wonder why? :) And yes, CNN always reported about it.

The Mosque in the background on CNN was dubbed “CNN Mosque” because it’s always in their background. They’re standing on the second floor hotel extension still within the compound. It was real funny to see them report from the scene in an alley on the compound once. Full body armor on, yet still on the compound in this alleyway they were reporting from the “battle area, live”. It’s so cheesy.

Thanks for the ping Calpernia! I'll add a MEDIA keyword. Hope someone who has a media ping list reads this great article.

"Postscript: I have had my staff aggressively pursue media coverage for all sorts of events that tell the other side of the story only to have them turned down or ignored by the press in Baghdad. Strangely, I found it much easier to lure the Arab media to a "non-lethal" event than the western outlets. Open a renovated school or a youth center and I could always count on Al-Iraqia or even Al-Jazeera to show up, but no western media ever showed up – ever."
