I can quite clearly remember what went on at the re visiting of The Battle of Britain. I distinctly heard this on the T/V. During that action (1940) a mythical character appeared in newspaper cartoons. It was of a "public school"(Upper class) flying officer- exagerated, possibly effeminate gestures. Flying Officer Kite et al.

The commentator declared that the "homosexual former public school boy " air ace won the battle. Now get this: "Over the masculine Luftwaffe". Honest- I would not invent this.

Turns out the bulk of the pilots in fighter planes (re an actual wing commander interviewed) were Flight Sergeants. Lower middle class or middle class people. I haven't read the comments yet; maybe someone has shot this down.I do know that if any historical figure wrote affectionate letters to a friend of the same sex they consider that evidence of sexual perversion. They think the word "love" means "sodomy" and vice versa.
