For the Good of the Forum
The_Reader_David

Posted on 01/18/2005 6:01:57 AM PST by The_Reader_David

I've noticed that some perceptive posters have succeeded in providing links which circumvent login pages at some news websites by giving a link to the 'printer-friendly' version of the news story.

For the good of the forum, if we are posting from a subscription website, could we all test the link to the printer-friendly version and see whether it gets around the login page? If so could we post it, rather than the link to the main story? Thanks.

Also a suggestion to the Jim Robinson: the topics list should include something like to better cover posts like this one ('For the good of the forum' might be a good topic, explained as suggestions/requests to fellow posters or moderators.)

Let's re-visit the topic here "For the "Good" of the Forum"

Why do people feel it necessary to re-post the same picture in the same thread? Not only does this needlessly use up valuable space on FR, it makes it most tedious for those with dial ups to load a thread.

Ok....a minimum of "space". Notice I said tedious to load for those with dial ups.

Nothing there, per se, about bandwidth on FR and repeated posting of the same regardless of where it resides begs the question.....the good of the forum.

I don't think we should try to be circumventing security or sharing passwords at PAY sites, however.

Everyone should have a bookmark to BugMeNot.com.

What ever happened to Title 17 U.S.C. "fair use"?

Their TOS prohibits paysites. If you put a signon to a paysite there, they will remove it.

Many printer pages on news sites DO bypass the login requirements since they assume if you get to the printer page you have to be logged in.

ALSO:

When you post a thread that requires a login, go to www.bugmenot.com. Type in the main website address. Once you do this, test the login on the site and see if it works (some do not....they seem to be removed by the site admin folks when they see them show up on Bugmenot). If it works, POST IT ON FR BELOW YOUR THREAD so we all can have a common login that works.

You can circumvent the NY Sun pretty easily by putting bogus info in their registration for a free trial.

Someone posting an image on FR takes no more space than someone else typing BUMP. Perhaps for the 'good of the forum' we should eliminate single word replies since they take up valuable space.

As I've already said in post #25: "You can change your browser settings so images won't display on your computer." That way you won't be bothered by slow loading images. All you'll see are empty boxes with little red x's in them. Others who enjoy a little more variety beyond just reading text can still view the images.

Bump conveys certain information that puts the topic in the front of the que, the x conveys?

Any response to a thread will bump it to the top of the queue on the latest posts page. If Jim didn't want images posted on FR, he'd disable the function. Since he hasn't I'll continue posting images.

I'm done talking to you. I've wasted enough time trying to explain something above your comprehension level.

PING! This is a great idea...please get it started (with Mr. Robertson's permission). I know how to make perfect soft-boiled eggs every time. Willing to share the secret.

Just to annoy whiny-assed cry babies that feel the need to drown in their own tears while thinking their opinion about what is "For the Good of the Forum" actually means a damned thing to anyone else.
