9News / Corky Scholl- With his head bandaged from a six-hour operation Thursday night, construction worker Patrick Lawler holds the nail that he accidentally shot into his head with a nail gun.

'Toothache' Was Really 4-Inch Nail In Skull

UPDATED: 6:34 pm EST January 16, 2005

LITTLETON, Colo. -- Patrick Lawler knew he had a toothache, he just didn't know why.

It took a dentist to pinpoint the problem: a 4-inch nail.

Lawler, 23, had unknowingly fired the nail into his skull six days earlier, after his nail gun backfired while he was doing construction work in Breckinridge, Colo.

His sister said one nail landed in a piece of wood, and Lawler didn't notice that a second nail had shot through his mouth.

Lawler was recovering Sunday at a Denver area hospital, after a four-hour operation. His family said the nail had plunged more than an inch into his brain, barely missing his right eye.

Lawler has no medical insurance, and hospital bills are expected to climb past $80,000. But doctors are calling him one lucky guy -- and his family says he's in good spirits.
