Benny Hinn’s Bangalore congregation kicks up a fuss
Religion News ^ | January 17th, 2005

Bangalore, Jan 16: The proposed ‘Pray for India’ programme later this week by American evangelist, Mr Benny Hinn has sparked a controversy with the Bharatiya Janata Party and Sangh parivar organisations up in arms against it, dubbing it as one that’s intended to promote religious conversion.

The Florida-based pastor, who claims to have the power to heal the sick and dying, is slated to attend the three-day prayer meeting from January 21 at Jakkur Airfield here which has been touted by the organisers as a big show, saying lakhs of people from across the country are expected to attend it.

The event has drawn strong opposition from the BJP, the Bajrang Dal and the Hindu Jagarana Vedike who see it as a conspiracy to convert the poor and vulnerable sections to Christianity.

The Bajrang Dal has already announced that 10,000 people would stage a demonstration at the venue. Vedike activists yesterday burnt publicity material of the proposed congregation. In fact, hoardings, banners and posters are now dotting various parts of the city.

Speaking to reporters here today, the Opposition BJP Leader in the legislative assembly, Mr B S Yediyurappa sought to take the state government to task for granting permission to hold the event at Jakkur Airfield, which is “sensitive” from the defence and security viewpoint.

Mr Yediyurappa termed as “unpardonable crime” and “insult to Hindus”, the circulation of pamphlets by organisers of the event criticising idol worship.

“Is the event not a conspiracy to convert people?,” he asked.

Accusing the organisers of promoting “wrong propaganda” that Mr Hinn is a “godman”, Mr Yediyurappa asked the government to reconsider its permission to the prayer meeting at Jakkur.

He said Hindus would voluntarily protest the event.

The Chief Minister, Mr N Dharam Singh has already stated that the government would not take any step to stop the programme, saying the administration cannot interfere with religious events.

Defending the convention, the organisers have said it is being conducted with “noble intention”. During his previous visit to Mumbai last year he did not speak anything about conversion or anything that affects the people’s religious sentiments, they said.

There are reports that Chief Ministers of some Congress-ruled states are likely to attend the meet. Mr Yediyurappa said while the government did not allow conduct of certain rituals at the Hindu-Muslim shrine at Bababudangiri Hills in Chikmagalur district late last year and amassed police force to enforce its decision, it’s now “organising and arranging” Mr Hinn’s programme.

Renowned Kannada litterateur and Jnanapeeth award winner, U R Ananthamurthy has cautioned Mr Dharam Singh against associating himself with the prayer meeting.

“The Chief Minister should not identify himself with this mass hysteria. We should not encourage this (mass hysteria),” Ananthamurthy said.

The police have said they have made elaborate security arrangements for the event.

Ok-why don't you check the status of Bangladeshi refugees in India-at last count, there were over 30 million(of which around 10% were legal) & the number is increasing frantically & will continue to till India completes it's border fence with Bangladesh.Lots of Nepalis, especially Gurkhas & Sherpas go to work in India. The Indian army is the source for sustenance of countless Nepali Gurkha families.Oh ,did I leave out that most ordinary Pakistanis would dearly love to come to India if visa regulations were not so rigid.

On the contrary, I understand a great deal.

India is a terrific place, growing faster than anywhere else in the world, and there are no fundamentalist Hindu political parties out there. Got it.

Are there any more obvious frauds out there than Benny Hinn? If so, they are few and far between.

What a con.

Why do so many Muslims and Hindus hate the Jewish People?

Whoever told you Hindus hate Jews? You seem to have  woven a web of  misinformation around you. You have mistaken Hinduism for Islam and Indians for Arabs. Are you aware of the difference between Islam and Hinduism.  I will tell you a few more things about Hinduism. Thanks to Hindus, India was the world's only place where Jews were never persecuted. This is a fact ask any Jewish scholar if you happen to know one. When Jews were being persecuted in the rest of the world (including your own Christian world) it was in India where they lived in complete safety and had a thriving community living alongside Hindus.   You got your information all wrong. Hindus do not share the Nazi or Islamic hatred of the Jews. Again thanks to the Hindus the rest of the Asia was not converted to the "religion of peace". Had it not been for the Hindus who stoped the advance of Islam at the other end of the Islamic world, more than half this planet  would have been Muslim and the world would have faced jihad of an unimaginable scale. The world owes it to us.

So is Hinduism based upon a guessing game of religion?
There is a world of difference between guessing and reasoning. Much of modern day science is built on the foundatinon of reasoning.

I do not wish to indulge in a futile argument  about the merits and de-merits of Hindusim and Christianity. My original point had to do with the fact that Hindus, Christians and Jews have been in the past living peacefully alongside each other in India and will continue doing so in future. And there is no religious hatred between them.

I got it backwards huh! You seem to really dislike Hinn and accuse him him of all sorts of here say nonsense, as for the shriners here is some material from the shriners link you supplied.

A message from the Imperial Potentate

Build on Masonry — Recruit a Shriner

I was recently approached by a woman who recognized me as a Shriner, but she had no idea that I was originally a Mason. That’s when I vowed to use my Imperial Year to not only promote the Shrine and Shriners Hospitals, but Masonry.

My slogan, “Build on Your Masonry – Recruit a Shriner,” encourages all Nobles to remember their Masonic roots

BTW - Meaning of POTENTATE
Pronunciation: 'powtn`teyt

Your anti-Masonic sites are just that - anti-Masonic. Texe Maars is a full-blown tin foiler. I own several of his books and occasionally read them for laughs.

Hinn is an heretic not because I disagree with him, but because he has set himself against Scripture and the ecumenical creeds.

As a PCUSA minister, I have conducted Services of Wholeness in which prayer is made for the health and healing of the sick - healing is understood to be contingent upon God's will and decree.

Hinn is much like the Christian Science practioner or the New Ager or Magician - believing that by the right invocations or actions he, as a shaman or magician, can control Deity and direct God's actions. God may choose to heal or not to heal. Benny promises healing and fails to deliver. Benny lies and makes claims of special communication with God. Benny has made bizarre claims that have been shown to be patently false.

Funny that speculation and conspiracy theories about Masons is gospel truth for you, but obvious heresy and falsehood around Hinn's operation doesn't seem to faze you.

You may pray that I find the light, but such a prayer would be redundant or anachronistic. I have been already found and claimed by the only true light, Jesus Christ.

Blessings friend.

1) I never said India was not making progress. Quite the contrary, the fact that some Americans are concerned about Indian computer programmers taking their jobs indicates a level of technical sophistication.
Your comment about "progressive Indians" had a tinge of sarcasm in it, but anyway.

2) At last glance, Ireland was well ahead of Indian in rate of growth. That doesn't diminish India's growth, but don't overstate it.

I will rephrase it : India is the second fastest rising economy after China. And gimme a break with your "last glances" ....they always turn out to be a decade old.

3) Fine. If my source was outdated, I stand corrected. But it was a western reporter in India in the late 1990s reporting this.

Your sources are not only outdated they are outright rubbish. Not for the first time your "western reporter" has been dishing out this kinda crap.

4) People do not just go where there is money, but where there is opportunity and liberty. Let me know when there is mass immigration into India, even from her far more backward neighbors.

A lot of people are willing to come back to India they are given the money they get in US. Liberty we already have here and opportuinity will also increase. Immigration to India ?........Did Sukhoi leave out the Tibetians, Afgans, Burmese and Sri Lankan Tamils ?

"God may choose to heal or not to heal. "

Support for this doctrine is not found in the Bible. They may have taught otherwise at seminary or this may have been your experience but this is not consistent with Jesus' ministry on earth.

If you disagree, then please find this doctrine in a relevant passage and show it to us in context, keeping consistency with the ministry of Jesus and the doctrinal statements which New Testament writers recorded.

Isaiah 53:5 is developed more fully in 1 Peter 2:24.

The healing described in Isaiah 53:5 is spiritual healing of the soul from sin.

Christ's healing ministry was an authentication of his identity and mission as Messiah - (Lk. 7:19-23; Jn 5:36; 6:14; 7:31; 9:30-32; 10:37-38; 11:42; 14:10-11; 15:24; 20:30-31; Acts 2:22).

So too, the healing ministry of the Apostles was in order to authenticate their message prior to the finalization of the New Testament Canon and the final destruction of the Old Covenant in AD 70 - (2 Cor. 12:12; Acts 2:43; 3:1-8; 4:33; 5:12; 9:36-42; 19:10-12; 28:8-9).

Even in the Apostolic era, not all Christians had the 'gift of healing' or 'gift of miracles'. For instance, when Dorcas died, Christians called in the Apostle Peter from another town and he, an Apostle, raised her from the dead - Acts 9:36-42. When the apostles died, the sign gifts ceased.

God may choose to heal or not to heal.

Yes, He has that option. However, every person that Jesus touched was healed.

Benny promises healing and fails to deliver.

I have never heard Benny promise healing to anyone.

Benny lies and makes claims of special communication with God.

I have "special" communication with God. It's called prayer.

"I have yet to see any of Hinn's defenders deal with any of the documented fabrications and frauds the man has engaged in."

Well, given the sources of the sketchy, at best, documentation, how do you expect one to deal with it? Comments that are taken out of context do not make for good solid "proof" when making allegations against others.

Has Benny Hinn healed anyone?

No and I challenge you to show me proof that he has taken credit for healing anyone.

Where is the proof and independent verification?

I believe that there have been many "healed" people who have documentation from their physicians stating that their healing was of extraordinary means.

What does the bible say about slandering another brother? And, for the LAST time, HINN has NOT ever said that HE healed people. Again, what does the bible say about slandering another brother?

When the apostles died, the sign gifts ceased.

Then God stopped being God when the last of the apostles died. If you think that the New Testament is for the apostles only then what hope do you have? You can't discard parts of it and accept others. It is either for today or it isn't. All of it.
