NBC NEWS TODAY SHOW CO-HOST KATIE COURIC HAS BEEN APPROACHED ABOUT CBS NEWS ANCHOR JOB, NETWORK SOURCE TELLS TIME Sun Jan 16 2005 11:00:51 ET

CBS Rumored to be Interested in ABC News Nightline Anchor Ted Koppel

CBS Rising Star Mika Brzezinski, Daughter of President Carter’s National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski, is Dark Horse Candidate

CNN’s Anderson Cooper Could Be in Running

New York – Four CBS News staff members lost their jobs last week in the wake of an independent-panel report that found serious flaws in the journalism that led to a 60 Minutes Wednesday story about President Bush’s National Guard service. One person who keeps his job is Dan Rather—at least until his previously announced retirement as Evening News anchor takes place in March (he’ll continue to report for 60 Minutes). The denouement of CBS’s journalistic failure has cast a new light on the search for Rather’s successor, making it more likely, in the view of some, that the network will seek an outsider for the job, TIME’s Sean Gregory reports.

The latest handicapping:

Katie Couric A network source tells TIME the Today Show co-anchor has been approached about the job. If she could be persuaded to jump, CBS would have to wait 16 months—when her NBC contract is up. But the network could name an old hand like Face the Nation’s Bob Schieffer or Early Show host Harry Smith as a caretaker until then.

Ted Koppel The Nightline king’s contract ends later this year, and CBS is rumored to be interested in him. But would the ABC vet want the job? At least he wouldn’t have to worry about competing with Letterman.

John Roberts CBS’s chief White House correspondent was the early favorite and is still in the mix. But CBS insiders say the longer the search drags on, the less likely he will get the job.

Scott Pelley The 60 Minutes Wednesday correspondent is an ace reporter, but he may have hurt himself with comments to the New York Observer that seemed to disparage Roberts.

Mika Brzezinski The CBS correspondent (and daughter of President Carter’s National Security Adviser, Zbigniew Brzezinski) is a dark horse candidate, possibly as part of an anchor team.

Anderson Cooper The rising CNN star (who also works for 60 Minutes Wednesday) could be in the running, especially if the long-rumored CNN-CBS merger moves ahead.

Not sure of his [David Gregory's] politics but being a presstitute I can guess.

You would guess right. Gregory is a hard left Bush hater who usually manages to conceal his bias but does slip up every now and then. He was particularly obnoxious during the White House's release of the President's TANG records back in early 2004.

If he weren't a certified Bush-hating DNC lackey, neither Katie Couric nor Don Imus would ever have him on their shows to discuss WH politics. The best Freeper to talk to about David Gregory is governsleastgovernsbest, our resident Today Show informant.

What does Ann Coulter call her?

"The smiling Eva Braun of morning television."

"Even if she did it topless
Umm... no.. no...and no. She is not 20 anymore."

Killjoy, thy name is apt -- no thanks for the gratuituous slur against other women when recoiling from the thought of a topless Katie Couric. Some women look great at any age. Ask Ben Franklin: he recommended older women because they don't age that much below the neck -- and they're so grateful!

Or Harry Reasoner! Just a "reader" is what I am looking for on a news show!

My favorite memory of Harry Reasoner is a story they did one night about world population -- remember when that was the big deal, too many people being born?

Anyway, after the story filled with the anti's and the know it alls, Reasoner sort of smirked and said, "I guess this is just as good a time as any to announce that Mrs. Reasoner and I are expecting our tenth child in the fall." (It could have been 9th, but it was 9th or 10th.)

It was a classic.

I am getting more and more convinced that CBS wants out of the News business, big time. Either that or they are smoking funny stuff!!!

Yeah, I'm afraid he might scare the kids. My favorite, though currently under contract to FOX, is Chris Wallace. Though, I doubt if CBS cares if the new anchor has even a teensy bit of credibility with conservatives. I think Chris is a reasonable guy.

If they want to rebuild integrity, they need John Stossel...IMHO.

John Batchlor is the MAN!

Well! That's nice: it's always good to see a former Connecticut-person (WFSB-3 & WTIC-61) make it big! <Connecticut ping?>

Well, the next week should be full of interesting machinations amongst the news hounds. Those who haven't been approached will leak that they have been, those who weren't offered enough money will let it be known, and the backstabbing will be ferocious.

Couric would be a disaster as an anchor, even if she weren't a Bush-hating leftist. Her voice is too high, she doesn't have gravitas (gosh I am glad I got to use that word) and her perkiness is her only asset. When she is serious, she looks remarkably like a Pekingese dog.
