CNNs Anderson Cooper Could Be in Running
New York Four CBS News staff members lost their jobs last week in the wake of an independent-panel report that found serious flaws in the journalism that led to a 60 Minutes Wednesday story about President Bushs National Guard service. One person who keeps his job is Dan Ratherat least until his previously announced retirement as Evening News anchor takes place in March (hell continue to report for 60 Minutes). The denouement of CBSs journalistic failure has cast a new light on the search for Rathers successor, making it more likely, in the view of some, that the network will seek an outsider for the job, TIMEs Sean Gregory reports.
The latest handicapping:
Katie Couric A network source tells TIME the Today Show co-anchor has been approached about the job. If she could be persuaded to jump, CBS would have to wait 16 monthswhen her NBC contract is up. But the network could name an old hand like Face the Nations Bob Schieffer or Early Show host Harry Smith as a caretaker until then.
Ted Koppel The Nightline kings contract ends later this year, and CBS is rumored to be interested in him. But would the ABC vet want the job? At least he wouldnt have to worry about competing with Letterman.
John Roberts CBSs chief White House correspondent was the early favorite and is still in the mix. But CBS insiders say the longer the search drags on, the less likely he will get the job.
Scott Pelley The 60 Minutes Wednesday correspondent is an ace reporter, but he may have hurt himself with comments to the New York Observer that seemed to disparage Roberts.
Mika Brzezinski The CBS correspondent (and daughter of President Carters National Security Adviser, Zbigniew Brzezinski) is a dark horse candidate, possibly as part of an anchor team.
Anderson Cooper The rising CNN star (who also works for 60 Minutes Wednesday) could be in the running, especially if the long-rumored CNN-CBS merger moves ahead.
Developing...
If they want to rebuild integrity, they need John Stossel...IMHO.
I don't know how valid this list is, but it is pretty entertaining. It would be beyond riotous if they were to hire Couric. It would take her about six months before they started pining for the good old days of Rather's ratings.
CBS appears to be exercising their right to commit commercial suicide....
CBS is racing toward their grave....
RIP
Semper Fi
I might consider watching if Anderson Cooper were selected.
I agree. I fail to see how they would think that Couric couls revive their ratings. Conservatives despise her as much as Rather.
"If they want to rebuild integrity, they need John Stossel..."
Excellent choice. "Man's mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimension." - Oliver Wendell Holmes

Oh, no. I don't want to give up your TS reports. LOL. What lunatic is running the show over there at CBS?
"Anderson Cooper The rising CNN star (who also works for 60 Minutes Wednesday) could be in the running, especially if the long-rumored CNN-CBS merger moves ahead."
Rising star.... That's funny.
Stossel would be an excellent choice.
"John Roberts CBSs chief White House correspondent was the early favorite and is still in the mix. But CBS insiders say the longer the search drags on, the less likely he will get the job"
Especially after his fingerprints were found in the Rathergate Memo Disaster...bye bye Roberts.
Anderson Cooper, no...will all the baggage about his personal preferences....he is out.
Katie Couric, she would be left in the dust in less than one week. They would do better with wacko Olberman. Maybe they should hire Chrissy Matthews, he is in line with their leftwing agenda.
To correct the quote: "... original dimensions." (plural)
To even consider Courik says much about CBS's grasp of the real world. The pendulum. The pendulum. Watch the pendulum, CBS. Ask not for whom the pendulum swings, CBS. It swings for you.
I'm with you. I'd actually consider watching if John Stossel was anchor, at least I feel like he tries to be a real journalist...but Couric? NOT ON YOUR LIFE!!! However, her removal from morning television would be welcomed. (Nothing like starting the day by accidentally stopping on NBC and being moved to nausea by little Katie's blatant agenda.)
I thought they said they were going to be "fair and balanced."
Katie Couric anchoring the SeeBS evening news and Howard Dean as the DNC chair. That's my idea of a dream team.
Just keep digging the hole deeper libs. Pretty soon you'll be in China, as if you're not there already! Ho ho ho Chi Minh!
Only because Ethel Rosenberg is dead.
