CNNs Anderson Cooper Could Be in Running
New York Four CBS News staff members lost their jobs last week in the wake of an independent-panel report that found serious flaws in the journalism that led to a 60 Minutes Wednesday story about President Bushs National Guard service. One person who keeps his job is Dan Ratherat least until his previously announced retirement as Evening News anchor takes place in March (hell continue to report for 60 Minutes). The denouement of CBSs journalistic failure has cast a new light on the search for Rathers successor, making it more likely, in the view of some, that the network will seek an outsider for the job, TIMEs Sean Gregory reports.
The latest handicapping:
Katie Couric A network source tells TIME the Today Show co-anchor has been approached about the job. If she could be persuaded to jump, CBS would have to wait 16 monthswhen her NBC contract is up. But the network could name an old hand like Face the Nations Bob Schieffer or Early Show host Harry Smith as a caretaker until then.
Ted Koppel The Nightline kings contract ends later this year, and CBS is rumored to be interested in him. But would the ABC vet want the job? At least he wouldnt have to worry about competing with Letterman.
John Roberts CBSs chief White House correspondent was the early favorite and is still in the mix. But CBS insiders say the longer the search drags on, the less likely he will get the job.
Scott Pelley The 60 Minutes Wednesday correspondent is an ace reporter, but he may have hurt himself with comments to the New York Observer that seemed to disparage Roberts.
Mika Brzezinski The CBS correspondent (and daughter of President Carters National Security Adviser, Zbigniew Brzezinski) is a dark horse candidate, possibly as part of an anchor team.
Anderson Cooper The rising CNN star (who also works for 60 Minutes Wednesday) could be in the running, especially if the long-rumored CNN-CBS merger moves ahead.
Developing...
That would be insane LOL! Her obvious liberal bias aside, she is NOT news anchor material.
Whatever CBS does is fine with me...
I have not seen any network programing in over 5 years.
It is all such a big waste.
If this is the direction they are going, they need to keep Rather.
Another good choice would be Charles McCord of the Imus in the Morning program. He is a great news reader.
Hmmmm not a single person associated with any Republicans, but a few closely tied to democraps...
hmmmm,...
"Only because Ethel Rosenberg is dead."
LOL!!! Nice one!
Wouldn't that be the natural progression since "Pukie" Katy Couric is the next rung down beneath the likes of who she would replace?
LOL
SeeBS and Couric -- a perfect match!
David Gregory is undoubtedly a bright man- yet I've never witnessed him attempt to hide his bias.
Before I got cable, I would see Cooper in the wee morning hours. IIRC, he was on ABC over-night news, so he was on around 4-5 a.m.
He was watchable; didn't seem to be agenda oriented. But that time slot is more of a 'break in' for new news-readers. It isn't until they get more exposure in the prime time that their true colors/leanings come out.
Cooper vaguely reminds me of Frank Reynolds, whom I always enjoyed watching when he was the evening anchor.
They could use a caretaker for CBS!
Whatever happened to Lester Holt? I thought he would be on their list and, frankly, I think he'd make an excellent anchor.
CBS would get mucho kudos for having the first A-A anchor. I can't imagine that he's not on the list.
*YAWN* Don't watch it now, haven't watched it before, won't watch it in the future....
Might as well also add Michael Moore to the staff as an investigative reporter.
"Conservatives despise her as much as Rather."
I believe you have misunderestimated the animosity towards Couric. I think she blows Rather away on the Hate-O-Meter. Couldn't be a better choice for the CBS Titanic.
Heather Nauert
That is true.
Most of these kinds of stories are PR department lead balloons to see what the public/industry reactions might be.
Remember, that a month or so ago, the top circulated name was Tim Russert, and he didn't even make the list in this Drudge release.
What night is Drudge's program on? Oh, yeh....TONITE!!! Co-inki-dink?????
