A day in the life of President Bush (photos) 1/15/05

President and Mrs. Bush did not make any public appearances today as the prepare for this week's 2nd Inaugural. The President proclaimed Sunday as National Sanctity of Human Life Day and Religious Freedom Day.

Today's Presidential Radio Address dealt with the issue of Social Security. For those interseted in reading the entire transcript (it's not long), click here: whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2005/01/20050115.html

QUOTE OF THE DAY: When President Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act in 1935, the average life expectancy was about 60 years, which meant that most Americans would not live to become eligible for benefits, then set at age 65.

Today, most Americans enjoy longer lives and longer retirements. And that presents a looming challenge. Because Social Security was created as a pay-as-you-go system, current retirees are supported by the taxes paid by current workers. Unfortunately, the ratio of workers to retirees is falling steadily. In the 1950s, there were about 16 workers paying in for each person drawing out. Today, it's about three workers for every beneficiary. And by the time today's workers in their mid 20s begin to retire, there will be just over two.

The idea of a hurricane lamp as a second inaugural gift seems prophetic: a symbol of that which protects the light when it must shine, though winds would foment and seek to blast and extinguish it.

How touching, Gretchen. Beautiful imagry -- and I wouldn't be at all surprised that is why Lenox chose to present pairs of hurrican lamps to the President and Vice President. I hadn't thought of it that way before, but have no doubt you are right.

I'm a newbie on FR, coming here to introduce myself...love this thread!

Hi. Welcome aboard, and thanks for introducing yourself on this thread. The "Day in the life of President Bush" treads are a long-running feature here on FR. We refer to them as "the Dose" -- as in a daily dose of Dubya. The group who volunteers to do them try hard to put one up every day, although some days may be missed due to personal events.

If you want to be added to the ping list for these threads, please let GretchenM know.

I wouldn't mind if it were freezing cold and sleeting on all the anti-Bush, anti-war loonies. But nice for everybody else, is that too much to ask? :^P

Interesting is it not that in 2005 Dick Cheney giving that speech is in fact older than the average life expectancy back in 1935.

Thanks for the ABCnews URL, Snugs. When I click on it, it automatically changes to this: http://abcnews.go.com/browserupgrade

Very frustrating, because as mentioned, there doesn't appear to be any way to say "no thanks." So there's no way past it. I wonder -- if I delete their most recent cookies, perhaps that would work.
