A day in the life of President Bush (photos) 1/15/05

President and Mrs. Bush did not make any public appearances today as the prepare for this week's 2nd Inaugural. The President proclaimed Sunday as National Sanctity of Human Life Day and Religious Freedom Day.

Today's Presidential Radio Address dealt with the issue of Social Security. For those interseted in reading the entire transcript (it's not long), click here: whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2005/01/20050115.html

QUOTE OF THE DAY: When President Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act in 1935, the average life expectancy was about 60 years, which meant that most Americans would not live to become eligible for benefits, then set at age 65.

Today, most Americans enjoy longer lives and longer retirements. And that presents a looming challenge. Because Social Security was created as a pay-as-you-go system, current retirees are supported by the taxes paid by current workers. Unfortunately, the ratio of workers to retirees is falling steadily. In the 1950s, there were about 16 workers paying in for each person drawing out. Today, it's about three workers for every beneficiary. And by the time today's workers in their mid 20s begin to retire, there will be just over two.

Grin...I just wish I knew what the joke was.

It was probably a Kerry joke (of which there are many :)

I'm always third. I can't get past third. In fact, this is my third time being third.

Snicker...you're in a rut.

Hi, jonny. I'm doing pretty good. I have nothing to complain about as long as my very dear 15-yr-old dog Annabelle is still snoozing by my feet. The days are counting down for her, and we're taking them one at a time. But she's still getting by OK.

Whew for a minute there I thought you were going to say they did away with AP.

That would be criminal to eliminate AP with MTV2 wouldn't it?

I'll be eagerly awaiting Barney and Miss Beazley tomorrow. (I have to wait a whole day?)

I searched for photos of them on the web the other day specifically so I could put them up today. But they're on my PC at the office. So unfortunately, you'll have to wait until tomorrow.

I'm also going to try to find stills from the Barbara Walters special last night. These days, if you want to go to ABCNEWS.com, they force you to install a new browser, which I don't want to do (could have spyware hooks ABC installed). There is no way to opt out of installing a new browser. So I can't open the ABCNEWS website. Very frustrating. If anyone else has come across this and found a way around it, could you clue me in?

hurricane lamp that will be presented to President Bush as an inauguration gift

I watched a replay today on TV of Pres. Bush's message at the National Cathedral on September 14, 2001 ... and have seen, as we ramp up to his second inaugural, a number of images of the swearing-in at the first one, with the rain on the camera lens and the participants. Not a driving rain, but a persistent one. I thought of the millions of tears shed here and around the world because of September 11 and its aftermath, and how appropriate it was, in retrospect, that President Bush was sworn in during a persistent rain.

I remember the president referring in his first inaugural to the "angel who rides in the whirlwind" and directing the storm.

The idea of a hurricane lamp as a second inaugural gift seems prophetic: a symbol of that which protects the light when it must shine, though winds would foment and seek to blast and extinguish it. May God grant our nation peace in a troubled time, and our president grace to lead us through, against all opposition to the good, and the Light that guides Bush, and the One who watches over America.

Thanks for the pix and the DC weather forecast.

Hi, prairie. I hope the mild weather holds through the inauguration, for you, the presidential party, and all those kids who'll be marching in the parade. Now as for the Dem dignitaries sitting up in the stands at the Capitol, I wouldn't mind a cloud burst right over their heads, LOL!

How do you pronounce your name? Does the "w" sound like a "v"?

That it certainly is. But we here on the Dose threads try our best to cheer our Dubya on as much as possible.
====
Absolutely, and we all cheer him on to the fullest extent. But we want him, at the same time, to be remembered as a CONSERVATIVE president, with the best intentions and performance for the US and its citizens, and as his only and fullest objective.

Greatness in a President happens automatically, it does not have to be manufactured -- it is a function of proper deeds for the country he serves. From my perspective, what is most important to the lasting image of a U.S. President, is what he does that is BEST FOR THIS COUNTRY AND ITS CITIZENS, not what is best for Washington politics.

Greatness can never be criticized nor torn down. It stands on its own in our country's history. His mandate, as passed forth by the voters, is to do what is right for this country. That is the President's job.

FDR -- and the Lefties in general -- are so for the people, aren't they?

I know. It's just amazing, isn't it?! I'll bet anything that the American public wasn't told back in 1935 that most adults alive then would not live to get a dime back for the money they paid in.

I'm glad you spotted that part of the quote, because I posted it specifically for the reason you noted -- that almost everything is smoke and mirrors with the Left.
