President and Mrs. Bush did not make any public appearances today as the prepare for this week's 2nd Inaugural. The President proclaimed Sunday as National Sanctity of Human Life Day and Religious Freedom Day.
Today's Presidential Radio Address dealt with the issue of Social Security. For those interseted in reading the entire transcript (it's not long), click here: whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2005/01/20050115.html
QUOTE OF THE DAY: When President Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act in 1935, the average life expectancy was about 60 years, which meant that most Americans would not live to become eligible for benefits, then set at age 65.
Today, most Americans enjoy longer lives and longer retirements. And that presents a looming challenge. Because Social Security was created as a pay-as-you-go system, current retirees are supported by the taxes paid by current workers. Unfortunately, the ratio of workers to retirees is falling steadily. In the 1950s, there were about 16 workers paying in for each person drawing out. Today, it's about three workers for every beneficiary. And by the time today's workers in their mid 20s begin to retire, there will be just over two.

How touching, Gretchen. Beautiful imagry -- and I wouldn't be at all surprised that is why Lenox chose to present pairs of hurrican lamps to the President and Vice President. I hadn't thought of it that way before, but have no doubt you are right.
good idea...I'll send it forward...

Hi. Welcome aboard, and thanks for introducing yourself on this thread. The "Day in the life of President Bush" treads are a long-running feature here on FR. We refer to them as "the Dose" -- as in a daily dose of Dubya. The group who volunteers to do them try hard to put one up every day, although some days may be missed due to personal events.
If you want to be added to the ping list for these threads, please let GretchenM know.
I wouldn't mind if it were freezing cold and sleeting on all the anti-Bush, anti-war loonies. But nice for everybody else, is that too much to ask? :^P
welcome! ask to be put on the ping list and you'll get notified when it comes up.
some of us just plain like to see the First Family and be reminded that there are good people in charge...
Thanks Snugs, glad to be here with some, (finally), sane people!
Thanks, snugs. I sure will give her good hug for you. She's a tough old girl.
I see you found your way...welcome aboard!
Welcome to the Dose I'm glad you decided to post. Jump right in this is a fun thread.
other posters also questioned what exactly he was doing...(grin)...
I don't disagree with anything you wrote.
Thank You! I know this sounds stupid, but how do I get on the ping list?
Interesting is it not that in 2005 Dick Cheney giving that speech is in fact older than the average life expectancy back in 1935.
Blech! Thank you for putting that image in my head :)
Ask and it shall be done.
Are you watching the dog show on Animal Planet..it's hosted by Ron Reagan...LOL....on Bravo the stars are doing a telethon for the tsumani victims...
Very frustrating, because as mentioned, there doesn't appear to be any way to say "no thanks." So there's no way past it. I wonder -- if I delete their most recent cookies, perhaps that would work.
I remember that one also the TV clip of him in Boston was a classic it looked as if he had never ever seen base ball let alone played it.
