...San Francisco and Seattle have those qualities. Places like Spokane generally do not.

I'd consider that a badge of honor.

""It would help youth struggling with their sexuality to realize they don't have to go away to a big city to be gay. You can be gay right here in Spokane," Reguindin said. "

Wellll, isn't that special.

What is a "gay oriented home"?

Sounds like segregation and "disenfranchisement(to use the libs bestest new word)" of non-gays.

Will there be a competition to name this new area?

If homosexuals have any real interest in their own safety and security, they would realize the folly of such a move.

A geographically defined area for homosexuals would be an easy target for those that would do them physical harm...for whatever reason or motivation. I agree with the assesment of opponents to this that it would create a high crime area. This would tax the law enforcement agencies in the area. It is not a wise move - regardless of how one views homosexuality.

"businesses will be asked to display signs in their windows proclaiming their support for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people."

Reminds me of the old (pre-1980) sign that used to hang in the window of Barney's Beanery in West Hollywood: "No dogs or fags allowed." Pressure groups finally forced them to take the sign down, of course, and the whole character of the place was changed shortly after that.

Gay activists in this staid Eastern Washington city are planning to create a neighborhood of gay-oriented homes, businesses and nightlife

Fantastic idea. I'm all for establishing as many sodomite magents as possible.... on the other side of the country from me.

I agree. Establish a "Gay District" with walls 20' tall. Throw them all in and then fill it with water to the 14' level.

Then toss in the sharks and paranas.

a "visibility campaign," in which businesses will be asked to display signs in their windows proclaiming their support for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

Are they serious?

Gay customers will be able to leave special cards at businesses they patronize, to let the owners know they were there

Are they serious?

"It would help youth struggling with their sexuality to realize they don't have to go away to a big city to be gay. You can be gay right here in Spokane,"

ROTFL! They can't be serious!

I have nothing against the queers being able to setup their own neighborhood. I'm as tolerant as the next fellow. But I wish in the name of fairness and equality to have the same rights as the queers. Namely the right to setup straight neighborhoods where no queers are allowed.

it's openly gay city councilman was selected, not elected....

Spokane did have a history of mining and farming, and farming is still important, and it had other industries, but now its really world known for its excellant heart institute ......

I have lived here for 27 yrs and never heard of any gay "newspaper"....

I would love for them to settle all their gay businesses together in one section , because then I will know what not to patronize.....

idiots......

Have any of these people trying to re-design the city to conform to the supposed standards of the so-called "creative class" read a word of Hayek or Jane Jacobs? Aren't they aware of the failure of such programs in Europe in the past century? Attempts at re-engineering cities along ideological lines have always failed and these attempts at redistricting Spokane and altering its financial priorites are a recipie for disaster.
