A POWERFUL home-made bomb was found in the main Roman Catholic cathedral of the southern city of Cotabato today but it failed to go off due to faulty wiring, police and church officials said.
The bomb was found in a box of rice that was left at the church on Monday but which had been undisturbed for the entire week, Father Jun Gumban, the assistant parish priest of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, said.
An unidentified woman gave the box to the security guard at the cathedral, saying the rice was for the parish priest.
The guard set it aside thinking it was a donation of food and it was only today that the janitor discovered the bomb inside, Gumban said.
Police bomb experts said the device, made of a 60mm mortar shell with a timing device, was a complete bomb but it did not go off because one wire had not been properly attached.
It was not clear when the bomb was set to go off.
Senior Inspector Abdulwahid Pedtucasan said the bomb was clearly meant to “cause bloodshed” and warned the public of this mixed Christian and Muslim city to be cautious.
In the past, Muslim separatist guerrillas of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) operating in the area, have carried out bombings of civilian targets, using mortar shells during fighting with government forces.
Eid Kabalu, spokesman of the MILF, denied that the rebel group was behind the latest bombing attempt.
About 600 MILF fighters overran a military outpost near Cotabato City in fighting that began on Monday and which left 23 soldiers and rebels dead in violation of a ceasefire signed between the two sides in 2002 to pave the way for peace talks.
The MILF previously said Monday’s attack on the army outpost was not sanctioned by their leadership.

Now now, FR is a family site....
And where is the often very vocal C.A.I.R. when it comes to this? The whiners are quite quiet when it comes the churches being bombed.

That group that always is quick to cry about discrimination and is easily offended by any slightest offense if someone doesn't respect islam enough. Big whiners about muslims being closely check at airports even though Americans also are. They stay quiet when muslims attack christians of course.
It's a front group for Hamas. Several of its leaders have been indicted here in the US.

There have been several miracles reported over ther re. the tsunami (see St. Thomas' Cathedral). Maybe the bomb maker was a boob, maybe higher authorities intervened. I wonder if the 'slamists have picked up on any of the signs...
Maybe "MF" might be more appropriate....?
