BOSTON -- Maria Lopez could soon become Judge Lopez once again -- on television.
Lopez, a former Massachusetts judge who resigned amid controversy over her conduct on the bench, is now being courted as a candidate for a legal television program in the same vein as "The People's Court" or "Judge Judy," according to her lawyer and her agent.
George N. Tobia Jr., Lopez's attorney, said that he had been approached by an unnamed television network about finding a candidate for a legal program -- and Lopez immediately came to mind.
"She was the first one who came to mind. She seemed to me to be a perfect fit," he said.
Tobia declined to name the network that approached him, and said there was nothing definite yet. He also said that no format had yet been selected; it could resemble one of the existing formats, like Judge Judy, or something else "new and creative."
Bill Thompson, her agent at Rebel Entertainment Partners Inc. in Los Angeles, confirmed that she was talking with "some major syndicators out here... as we speak."
"She's definitely an amazing person," he said.
A message left at Lopez's home was not immediately returned.
In 2003, Lopez resigned after a public outcry over her handling of a child molestation case. Lopez was heavily criticized for sentencing Charles "Ebony" Horton, a transgendered man, to probation and house arrest after he pleaded guilty to kidnapping an 11-year-old boy and holding a screwdriver to his neck when he refused to perform a sex act.
Prosecutors had recommended between 8 and 10 years in prison, and a tape of one court hearing aired repeatedly showed Lopez loudly berating the prosecutor.
"I am not a real judge. I just play one on TV."
Let's "hold a screwdriver" to HER neck and see what kind of perverted sexual acts she will publicly perform on the hollwierdos. I think she should also do that in the center of Tehran.

I have a "relative" (by marriage) that thinks that Judge Judy is the epitome of judicial conduct.
She actually thinks that the screeching harpy is entirely representative of how judges conduct their courtroom.
We need another one of those, I'm sure, so that the idiots in our world have one more dumb ass so-called jurist to look up to.

This judge has needed a lawyer on more than one occassion. The incident described in the article was just the one where the excrement hit the fan. She "presided" over a high profile probate case that drug on for years and ended up with criminal indictments being handed down on at least one of the lawyers. Suggestions were made that Lopez was a little too cozy with counsel, but, of course, nothing stuck. She, at the very least, did a Judge Ito. I recall a number of glowing profiles of her in the media during the trial, despite its in ordinate length and her obvious lack of control.
