CBS News ^

Do a search on the word "Vietnam" and you'll find the two quotes below (pages 61 & 130 when printed)

http://wwwimage.cbsnews.com/htdocs/pdf/complete_report/CBS_Report.pdf

"However, Mapes had information prior to the airing of the September 8 Segment that President Bush, while in the TexANG, did volunteer for service in Vietnam but was turned down in favor of more experienced pilots.72 For example, a flight instructor who served in the TexANG with Lieutenant Bush advised Mapes in 1999 that Lieutenant Bush “did want to go to Vietnam but others went first.” Similarly, several others advised Mapes in 1999, and again in 2004 before September 8, that Lieutenant Bush had volunteered to go to Vietnam but did not have enough flight hours to qualify." - page 140 on computer

"Mapes eventually tracked down Lieutenant Colonel Killian’s son who, according to her notes, told her that then-Lieutenant Bush had volunteered for active duty in Vietnam but did not have enough flight hours to qualify." - page 71 on computer

Don't know if you can prove that, but I'll bet that's on the money.

What 60 Minutes did to Bush is typical of what 60 minutes does every time Dan Rather reads. I suspect that if an Independent Report were generated for any given show, one would see the same pattern of deception.

They just got too ambitious with their lies this time.

More bias by omission. The MSM picks and chooses what it 'news' based on its agenda. Wouldn't it be nice if CBS would hold a press conference where THEY would have to field questions about their conduct?

You're exactly right. You got one "deferment" for each year you were in college; Kerry asked his draft board for a fifth, to go study in France, but they turned him down, so he joined the NAVAL RESERVE.

According to another pilot who flew with Bush - they both volunteered to go to Vietnam and were turned down because the AF was not sending F-102's to that theatre - and Bush had no experience in the F-104 which was a 2-seater.

Sooooo .. it was about equipment experience - not just experience - which some might try to use as Bush not being a qualified pilot. He was more than qualified in the F-102 - just not any other aircraft.

'course, those 'more experienced pilots' were flying planes that they were actually using in Nam. Not sure that the F-102 that W flew in the TANG ever saw action in SE Asia.

....President Bush, while in the TexANG, did volunteer for service in Vietnam but was turned down in favor of more experienced pilots.

Actually the F-102 was deployed to Viet Nam.

Tan Son Nhut RTAFB detachment 1963 till 1970
Da-Nang AB, RSVN detachment 1963 till 1970
Don Muang IAP, Thailand 1963 till 1970
Clark AB, Philippines 1968 till 1970

Just not during the period that W was flying them. I'd have a tough time believing that he didn't know he'd never be sent over because of that.

Actually the F-102 was deployed to Viet Nam.
