Michael Chertnof - New HomeLand Security Secretary per Fox News
Whoops -- correction to my post #18 -- that should be Whitewater hearings, not Watergate hearings (Chertoff isn't THAT old!).
Don't know if it is my tv, but Chertoff doesn't look altogether healthy.
He's in fine health.
He's an AWESOME pick.
Chertoff is naturally thin and has those dark circles under the eyes. He looked that way ten years ago. I doubt either of those things are a sign of ill-health, at least in his case.
Flames up....pubbiecrats
To quote Ann Coulter, "When 100% of the Terrorists are Muslim it's not racial profiling, it's called A DESCRIPTION OF THE SUSPECT!"
Thanks, the ACLU, NY Slimes, LA Slimes, Washington Compost and ABCNNBCBS will be trashing him before the day is over.
Thanks, that's good to know. He appears older than stated age.
That's just his "look". He is not a featherweight, don't let that look fool you. Great nominee!
Think Whitewater hearings. He's a familiar name and face to many of us.
Why would Bush take a good conservative off the appeals court and then risk having to go through the whole confirmation process of a new appointee?
Never carried a gun?
Maybe you should do some research before you post.
This leads me to believe that the rest of your post is ill researched.
i agree that he's not much but a "safe" pick. he's a career lawyer among career lawyers. that said, hopefully he will be a fierce advocate for the laws - including the immigration laws. but, alas, the president doesn't really seem worried about our southern border.
Senator Clinton Again Lone Voice Against Chertoff
By TIMOTHY STARKS New York Sun June 11, 2003
Senator Clinton yesterday stood alone in a vote against judicial nominee Michael Chertoff, who had served as an aide to Senator DAmato in the Whitewater investigation. It was the second time she has gone solo in trying and failing to block Mr. Chertoffs confirmation to a federal post. [excerpt]
Let's not confuse your immigration agenda with homeland security. Name one of the 9/11 terrorists that entered this country illegally?
Must be an old bio. He's on the Third Circuit right now
In 2001, Mrs. Clinton was the only senator to vote against Mr. Chertoff for the assistant attorney general position.
"Based on all the information she had, she did not believe he should be elevated to a position of such high responsibility," a spokeswoman for Mrs. Clinton, Karen Dunn, said.
I think Gitmo prefers someone with the character of Benard Kerik.
Justice Dept. Warns of Risk to Prosecution and Security
excerpt:
In an argument intended to salvage the only major prosecution to result directly from the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, Assistant Attorney General Michael Chertoff said that Mr. Moussaoui had no constitutional right to question enemy combatants held overseas, even if they might have information that could help him defend himself against charges that carry the death penalty.
"This is not a Sixth Amendment case," Mr. Chertoff told a three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, alluding to the right of criminal defendants to seek out witnesses on their behalf under the Sixth Amendment of the Constitution. "What the defendant wants is to expand the Sixth Amendment."
Mr. Chertoff, who runs the Justice Department's criminal division and whose presence here was intended to underscore the significance of the case to the Bush administration, said that "the damage to the United States will be immediate and irreparable" if a court allowed Mr. Moussaoui and his lawyers to interrupt the interrogation of Al Qaeda suspects held abroad.
~snip~
He is not a Christian but he is a strong Conservative. He did a great job during the White Water Hearings.
