NYC Council Approves Rules Of Conduct For Gun Manufacturers
Friday, January 07, 2005
After a long battle, a measure that would force gun dealers and manufacturers to follow a code of conduct or face lawsuits was approved by the City Council on a vote of 43-2. Int. 0365-2004, which would hold gun makers responsible for the criminal misuse of firearms, was kept at bay for almost two years while Council Speaker Gifford Miller (D) and Mayor Micheal Bloomberg (R) worked with sponsors of the measure to pry it out of Chairman Peter Vallone`s (D) Public Safety Committee. Miller and Bloomberg were forced to accept several changes to the original proposal but the end result still amounts to an assault on consumer access to a legal product.
Hell, last I saw, more people were killed by cars than guns in New York.
I believe only the U.S. Congress has the constitutional authority to regulate interstate commerce...more feel good political posturing amounting to a sound and fury signifying nothing....
I would like to have a code of conduct for lawmakers that included the ability to sue them for wrongful harm caused by their silly laws.
Isn't that nice? They come up with 22,000 laws that they foist off on the rest of us and then when LAWS fail to curb crime, they decide that to come up with a "code of conduct" for other people to live by.
If I were a gun manufacturer, I would be pushing the 109th Congress hard to fix them, and ALL manufacturers of legal non-defective products, from lawsuits resulting from the illegal misuse of their product.
I agree. This will simply enable a lot of meaningless state and local lawsuits that will be overthrown in federal court. There should be a liability for creating the false basis for needless tort cases. The Pols should be held financially accountable for the cost to the court system.
At least then we could target him without having to argue among ourselves.
A RINO carries some weight with some border-line conservatives but a DIMCRAP wouldn't (Democrat In Most Cases Republican As Possible -- DIMCRAP)
How many firearm makers are there in New YOLK city?
I live in New York city and believe me, this city council is a freggin` joke. Every year another corruption scandal comes out yet every election the idiots who live here insist on re-electing these bonafide morons over and over and over and over. Democrats elected in every single district, it drives me up the wall, then everyone complains "waaaah! Why are we paying the highest taxes in the country" Then you read stories how the city council blows tons of cash redecorating their offices, or blowing cash on vacations, meanwhile RINO Bloomberg closes firehouses or forces cops into early retirement because the "city is tapped for cash". How bad is it? Look who is my Senator. That`s how bad. There`s a reason Hitlery selected New York, it`s the Mecca of liberalism where every liberal ideal is promoted to death.
Do you know there`s a law that says NYC taxi drivers cannot have weapons of any kind? Not even toy guns, not tire irons nor knives not even baseball bats, yet driving a taxi in NYC is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. 96 cab drivers murdered on the job in one year alone in the `90`s when David "let them riot" Dinkins was Mayor. Not even cops have it that dangerous, but lets make the cabdrivers sitting ducks so killers can have it even easier.
Then you read stories like this.....
Cab driver kills armed robber, goes to jail
June 18, 2001, The New Britain Herald
NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT -- A cab driver shot and killed his passenger Friday after the man allegedly slashed the driver's throat during an attempted robbery, police said.
The cabbie then allegedly pulled the dying assailant from the car and drove off.
Police discovered the still-unidentified passenger on the side of the road in the 100 block of Chapel Street in the Fair Haven neighborhood. They received the report of an injured person at 11:15 p.m.
Officers located the driver, John Lutters, across town more than two hours later.
Lutters, 42, works for Metro Taxi.
"It looks like it's an attempted robbery and the cab driver retaliated with a handgun," said Sgt. John Velleca, a supervisor in the detective bureau. "At this point, there's no evidence that suggests anything other than that."
The investigation, however, was ongoing, Velleca said, and additional charges could be filed if the evidence warrants.
By Saturday, police had charged Lutters only with carrying a pistol without a permit.
Stories of the assault and shooting circulated quickly Saturday among the community of cab drivers.
"We know it's not a safe job. It's hard," said Mohammed Mahmoud, who has driven for Metro on and off for 10 years.
Standing by his cab outside Union Station, Mahmoud said his brother-in-law was robbed with a gun just two weeks ago. "They put a gun to his side," he said. "It's a scary job."
Drivers at Tweed-New Haven Airport said many of their colleagues are scared to take fares in certain neighborhoods.
"Fair Haven is a crazy place," said Atiq Khandhari, a driver for two years. Most drivers don't want to go there in the night time. I don't worry about it, because I drive for a living."
Accounts from police and Metro cab drivers helped assemble a picture of a routine fare that turned deadly.
Police believe Lutters picked up the passenger on Chapel Street, Velleca said. Almost immediately, the driver told police, the passenger put a pair of scissors to his neck and demanded money. Then he began to cut the driver's throat, Velleca said.
But Lutters carried a gun, police said. He fired once into the back seat, striking the man in the neck, police said.
Lutters then pulled him out of the car and drove off.
Authorities found the stricken man on the side of the road and rushed him to Yale-New Haven Hospital. He died at 3:17 a.m. Saturday.
It wasn't until 1:30 a.m. that Lutters called police. Officers found him and his cab in a parking lot of a coffee shop on Whalley Avenue at Ramsdell Street.
Lutters also was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he received stitches to close his wound. Later, he was brought to police headquarters and then to the lock-up.
He posted $25,000 bond Saturday afternoon and was released.
Police had not identified the dead man as of Saturday night, Velleca said.
Lutters could not be reached for comment Saturday. Officials from Metro Taxi did not return calls for comment.
The drivers on the street, however, said they're scared.
"We work at night. We don't know who's got a knife, who's got a gun," said Tariq Shaikh. "We are scared to go at night time to Fair Haven."
Said Mahmoud: "What are you going to do? You will defend yourself."
Correct. This body has no authority and is open to a counter-suit.
Will the last person to leave NYC please switch off the light.
who the hell are these bozoids?
None murdered in more than 2 years. Great news, but I still think you guys should be allowed to arm yourselves, as should the rest of us.
Assclowns. Can you tell that we have a grand total of *2* Republicans on the City Council? ;)
I remember the early 90s all too well.
Hard to believe we live in the same city, huh?
Silk Stocking District and where else?
Doesn't really matter. Its virtually impossible to own a licensed handgun in New York City. No point in buying one if you can't legally use one to defend yourself.
I think this is nothing but another cynical attempt at a revenue stream for the City.
