Health officials lift flu vaccine limits in state Surplus of 400,000 adult doses makes shots available to all

Facing a huge surplus of unused influenza vaccine, California health authorities said Friday that all remaining flu shots were now available to anyone in the state who wanted one.

The state Department of Health Services currently has on hand more than 400,000 adult doses of vaccine and 265,000 doses formulated for children. Individual physicians may order the vaccine from the state and administer shots to any patient.

The transformation from flu shot shortage to flu shot glut took place slowly, as it became apparent that there would be no repeat of the early influenza season that occurred one year ago.

Actually, I think the transformation from shortage to glut was quick, it changed on election day.

This was another manufactured hysteria by the left, trying to blame it on Bush. Once he got elected, all of a sudden, there was no shortage, which of course makes it obvious, that there never was any shortage in the first place.

You're so right. And not only was there never a shortage, evidently there was also no impending "epidemic." Electioneering at its very worst.

I agree the electioneering was rotten, but there was no reliable way to predict whethere there would be an epidemic or not. You can see flu epidemics as late as April, so there is still a chance, but right now it looks like this was a light year for influenza and we lucked out.

Does this mean we're not all gonna die?

If there is no reliable way of predicting, that why whip up hysteria, except to have something else to blame on President Bush.

This was just more of the Dem scare tactic.

True. There is still a chance, but I have a feeling it'll be a mild flu year. When I think of all those old people standing in line before dawn in Florida, waiting to get their shots, it makes my blood boil. The Dems might as well have yelled "fire" in a crowded theater.

Exactly. Oil and gas prices peaked right before the election and have been coming down ever since.

Every year my SIL gets a flu shot and some form of the flu. She pissed and moaned all last fall about not being able to get her shot, amazing she has not gotten even a cold so far this season. Makes you wonder how many people get the flu as a result of the shot.

There was no reason to whip up hysteria, the Dems were trying to smear Bush. As far as I can tell, Bush had nothing to do with the Chiron problem and ensuing shortage.

But this is not to say we weren't at some risk, we just lucked out this year. This could have turned out badly, just look back a year.

Has anyone else noticed that, in a year when the number of people receiving flu vaccinations is way down, the number of flu cases is also way down?

Cause and effect?

The media keeps talking about how fortunate we have been that this year has been such an unusually mild flu season. Has anyone ever stopped to consider that perhaps the reason for the mild flu season is because a much lower number of people got that stupid flu shot? I've only had the flu twice in my life. The two years that I got a flu shot.

I've speculated much the same thing, and in fact had predicted a mild flu season when they started screaming about there not being shots available. I wouldn't be suprised at all if the flu started to pick up a bit now that they are pushing it out more.

You would think there'd have been an epidemic from all those poor Democrats waiting for 10 hours in the cold, cold, rain to vote for Kerry on Nov 2.

Every year, my father gets a shot and gets down sick for 7-10 days, then argues that it isn't the flu. This year, no shot, weakened condition from major surgery on his Aorta, and guess what, no flu. Thankfully.

My ex's grandfather got a shot a few years back, was in the hospital within 48 hours, came out "room temperature" 3 days later.

You can have the shot.

Rush, or someone with a media presence, ought to figure out just how much money this little stunt by the Democrat Party and their Kool-Aid drinkers has cost the American public and American companies.
