Racist Boondocks Cartoon in Sunday papers 1/9/05
Philadelphia Inquirer | 1/9/05 | American Infidel

Posted on 01/09/2005 7:31:05 AM PST by American Infidel

I know I shouldn't be nearly as angry as I am over this (In fact, I know I shouldn't even care), but I couldn't help but notice that featured prominently on the top of the front page of the comic section of today's Philadelphia Inquirer (big surprise) was today's blatantly racist Boondocks comic strip. The strip in question consisted of one frame in which two young black characters observed a white character jogging in the snow while dressed for warm weather. The line written for the black characters is simply “White People”. The implication was obviously that only white people would do something as stupid as to go jogging in the winter, while being dressed for warmer weather. Imagine for a moment that the strip consisted of two white men waiting for a bus to take them to work while observing a black man sitting on the corner, drinking a 40 ounce malt liquor beverage, with the line, “Black People” coming from one of the white characters, implying that only black people would be sitting on the corner on a week day, getting drunk while other people were on their way to work. Not only would this strip never see the light of day, but all future strips from the cartoonist would have been cancelled. The Philadelphia Inquirer on the other hand, chooses to run the strip and to feature it prominently at the top of the front page of the comic section. I understand that Aaron McGruder is the “voice of angry black America” and that he must be treated with kid gloves, otherwise they will be accused of being racist and no corporate entity wants that kind of P.R., but this is ridiculous. It's not the strip itself that ticked me off (it was sort of humorous actually), it was the hypocrisy and the double standard of UPI, the Philly Inquirer, and the other urban newspapers that I am sure ran the strip today. OK that's my rant. Thanks for listening.

"Been in the city much? "

I live in Denver. I'd say that's a pretty decent sized city.

Bloom County picked on so much, and most of it "white", yet, it wasn't racist. For this guy to say he took examples from Bloom County says he really didn't pay attention.

Boy everyone is reading the wrong thing into this cartoon. Some posts in this thread are showing what some freepers apparently believe about black people more than what this cartoon is saying.

Actually, the cartoon didn't make a bit of difference to me. That's why I figured I could poke some fun at it from a DUh perspective.

At any rate, it seemed to be a waste of ink to me otherwise. I mean really, what's the point other than to try and bait an adverse reaction? It doesn't contribute anything good or bad to race relations except in this case the poor use of bandwidth.

On the other hand, I am certainly convinced of McGruder's hatred of just about any other racial group. It's easy to believe he'd make even a comic strip a medium of "hate politics".

In the end, it's best that we just ignore him. We should do what we can in our own way to treat each other as fellow men and women. Allowing ourselves to be baited into negative thinking doesn't help anyone.

The "Cartoon" is very racist. If it were objective, the two kids standing there would have said something else to convey their opinion of the stupid jogger. "Yuppies" or "Liberals” or maybe just "Moron” but to include the entire white race in their derisive remark is indeed racist.

I have to admit that the old man seems like the intelligence and fairness of the strip characters, but that does not excuse the racism that the Huey character displays.

Huey is a racist, he is anti-white, he is almost an anarchist.

And for Boondocks to still be around, despite it's blatant racism is a disgrace.

There is not one white cartoonist that would still be printing cartoons if that cartoon showed a young Black male walking down the street with his pants half off, listening to a Boom Box, and two white charactes standing there saying, "Black People".

That white cartoonist that did that would be drummed out of town, sued, possibly assaulted in the street, would have Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson stage a protest in front of his house, demand money from him and the cartoonist guild for allowing him to even be a member, and forced to attend sensitivity training.

Black conservative ping

If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)

Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.

I used to run inthe snow, didn't bother me, and white people thought I was crazy because I was just discharged from the Marines...but NO ONE ever made it an issue of race, and THAT is why this cartoon is racist, just like Mcgruder

Then they should have said the guy was crazy for what he was doing, not crazy because he is white.

That is why this is racist. It was all about RACE, not whether the guy is nuts for running in the winter.

For those who never did, the cold weather can allow you to run longer because you dont overheat.

it does take longer to warm up, but you can run faster while cooler, and the feeling of the crisper air is awsome!

That is another reason people go skiing, the crisp air feels great.

There are alot more important things to worry about then racial double standards in the media my friend.

One of the key reasons that white folk are generally more successful than black folk in this world is that we don't have a tendency to whine and complain at every perceived racial or personal slight.

I liked runnning in the heat sometimes, you warmed up faster, your muscles wer naturally looser, you sweat like a DOG and that felt good for the weight loss aspect...

You can run longer sometimes when hot...

Doesnt feel as good as cold air when you breath, but you feel better in the heat.

It's funny that I just finished remarking to my husband about the Boondocks cartoon before I got on the computer and the first post I saw was yours. My husband's response was that it's just a stupid racist cartoon.

I think the cartoon is kinda funny.

Yes, if the positions were reversed there would be black people complaining about racism, but in that case the problem would be the black people's perceptions, not the cartoon itself. Why should we (as white people) then duplicate the same problem and complain about racism where none probably exists? No need for us to sink to the Jesse Jackson level.

It’s funny that two words written by McGruder could invoke white people to stereotypically post 150+ messages, beating the two words into the ground. Maybe an occasional sting helps us to not behave like McGruder in reverse, though I doubt that was the cartoonist's intention. Like the cigarette manufacturers used to use cartoons to reach the young, he tries to use simple single panel cartoons to plant the seeds of victimhood into the next generation of Democrats.

Oh, the shame of it.
Black people talking about white people. Next we will have white people talking about black people.
Wouldn't that be something?

For my entire sentient life, I was taught how wrong white people were for the crimes of slavery, our own aparthied in the south, and the general behaviour white people showwed to Blacks brought her against their will.

And I agree, we were awful.

BUT, in the last 40 years, the problem was fixed as much as government could, and actions that were considered racist were made illegal. And rightly so.

However, there is just too much that is the opposite.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

Macgruder is a racist and he needs to be taken out of all newspapers.

Dont you dare call my posts racist.

And that was not sarcasm.

Macgruders cartoon is clearly racist, and calling it racist is not racist, it is just obvious.

Typical white liberal race baiting. When no racial controversy exists then they by all means must create one.
