Protest Interrupts Local Broadcasts
1/6/2005 6:45 PM (WROC-TV Rochester) CBS
The Thursday afternoon edition of News 8 Now At Noon was interrupted by protestors. The interruption occured as reporter Elizabeth Harness broadcast live the story of the Highland Hospital power outage.
The group claimed to be a local media watchdog organization. But the group may be nothing more than pranksters intent on interrupting local news coverage.
Three men in costume -- one wearing a flesh-toned body suit, labeled "invisible suit," interrupted Harness's live report.
The man in the invisible suit jumped up and down behind the reporter, while two others approached Harness, pushing her into the side of the broadcast truck, shouting at her "What's the mood at the hospital today?"
The public did not see the assault, as video of the power outage was rolling by that time.
Minutes later, hospital security and the Rochester Police Department detained the three men for several hours. All are from Rochester, and claim to be part of a non-violent media watchdog group.
However, when confronted and asked to give more about their organization, and why they wear masks, they provided no answers.
According to police, the trio asked for representation by the American Civil Liberties Union. The A.C.L.U. said it wanted nothing to do with them.
The trio remained unclear as to what sort of gripe they have with local media.
I view this more as harrasment than a legitmate "protest". If it keeps happening I believe we'll see these guys get their asses kicked on the 11:00 news.
Are you saying that these weirdo's did NOT actually push the reporter as stated in the article, or are you saying the reported pushed back eventually after being pushed by the weirdos?
Sorry if this a dumb question. I just didn't completely understand your statement.
What exactly does
the media "think" about
Freepers? Just because
they say someone's nuts
doesn't make it so. Maybe,
but not on their word . . .
I'm not really sure just who is lower or dumber the ACLU or them and right now I'm thinking the ACLU.
..did that happen or did you just read the media report on this..do the research..read the rest of the story..DROPPED CHARGES!
Very irresponsible reporting.
It's not a dumb question. There wasn't any pushing. Just some in-your-face weirdness.
OK, now that is a little more clear. The group claims to be NON-violent. You say they didn't actually push her physically into the van, perhaps they crowded her then? Did they touch her at all?
I don't have the bandwidth to download the videos, sorry for the questions for the dial up perspective.
They never pushed her - the guy came up and pushed a microphone in her face and said "What's the mood at the hospital?" Basically the same thing that local news reporterettes like this chick have been doingfor decades, but she was obviously a bit startled to have the tables turned - she reached out and gave him a very gentle push to basically keep the guy at arm's-length. He (the protester) never touched her at all - the only contact between the two was the push she gave him, which was not what I would call a hard shove.
I read the post. And no, I wouldn't be surprised that the charges were dropped. Nobody prosecutes PETA when they throw animal remains. Don't want the publicity. If these idiot dweebes did push that woman, they should be behind bars even if she is a reporter!
They didn't.
Is that a big acorn in his right pocket?
Lol...I think it's a tube sock???
Thank you for your patience and answers with me on this.
Another post said that charges were dropped. I guess after viewing the video that they decided that she was not really pushed after all.
You often see reporters covering football games get the same reactions from fans. IMHO, it is part of the "live" broadcast charm (or quite the opposite).
I wonder if "stalking" might be a better charge?
Never mind....I won't finish that thought. Let me go to the bathroom and wash my mind out.
DU field trip.
Got it.
The unbiased media is so quick to interview anyone that can tear down this country, the Michael Moores (he might be deemed by some as an Idiot),..sorry I have no sympathy for the media especially when they continue to mislead or"misrepresent" the facts!
I do not know you NewsBreakers; but keep it "clean, safe and keep me laughing.
Yeah, stalking or harrassment might be appropriate for the goofballs. But now that I know that the News people lied about being assaulted and tried to press charges I have to ask myself "Who pisses me off more? Fruitcakes without a cause or lying media pundits?"
I'm not sure I believe the part about them pushing her up against the side of the truck. If they had, they'd have been charged with assault. They weren't charge.
Something's kindof fishy about that portion of the report. At least it seems to be.
