GRAND RAPIDS, January 5, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A film rejected by Hollywood distributors has set a record for the longest test screening in history -- 55 weeks -- set at the Michigan theatre where it has been playing since December 2003. The pro-family, feel-good comedy, Uncle Nino, out-endured every other film released in the US in 2004, including The Passion of the Christ.
Made for only US $2.9 million and shot in 25 days, Uncle Nino is the story of "an eccentric Italian relative whose visit helps heal a fractured American family," according to a telegraph.co.uk report.
The test-screening was expected to last two weeks, but because of the massive popularity at the Grand Rapids cinema where it debuted, Uncle Nino continues to be shown.
Hollywood distributors all initially rejected the movie. The Grand Rapids theatre that screened the movie did so only after being persuaded by a friend of the film's creator. The producers have finally landed a distribution contract and Uncle Nino will be released in the U.S. in February, and Internationally later in 2005.
The film is the work of Chicago director Robert Shallcross, writer of the 1994 movie Little Giants, who has spent the intervening years directing television commercials.
"I wanted to tell a story about an American family that was missing out on some of the simple, important pleasures in life," he said. He said the hectic pace of advertising that left him little time to spend with his four children was the inspiration for writing the movie.
Actor Pierrino Mascarino, who plays the Italian uncle, has traveled on several occasions to the Grand Rapids cinema, "appearing at screenings unannounced and in character and hugging audience members as they leave."

I want to see the Passion but I'm afraid it will leave me highly unsettled. I generally avoid watching graphic violence. This Easter season, I'll probably watch it on a small screen. My friends still tease me because I watched Blair Witch in a tiny window on my PC!
Congrats, Uncle Nino. It's a tough biz -- especially for family-friendly filmmakers.
And while we're talking movies, don't forget that powerful, pro-life drama "one day in may". :)

"If your standard form of expression is a collection of colorful expletive deletives and not much else, what are you going to have to say when you get really upset!!"
A collection of colorful expletive deletives REALLY LOUD
Why not, when they can be made so cheaply and be so successful?
I think I know why not. I think it's because nobody in Hollywierd understands reality. So how can they make movies about it?
Shalom.

I think J'lo's butt is super. And she knows how to shake it. Did you see her "flash dance" music video?
Of your list I've seen one and I could add 2 more.
I don't think you have to get out more. I think Hollywierd needs to start making better movies.
Shalom.
It is a state of the art complex with an Imax theatre and Nino has been very popular. The theatre was also the premier host of The Polar Express.
Absolutely. It's the first movie that I've seen twice in a theater in years but I'm still a bit surprised that it got that PG rating. While it manages to keep a lot of gritty specifics and most real violence just out of sight, what's suggested in several scenes is really quite dark and disturbing. I'm not complaining about it because I think they did it well and it gives the movie a lot of dramatic and emotional weight. I'm just surprised that they pulled it off with a PG rather than PG-13.
Yes, and Elastigirl didn't want to leave the crimefighting up to the "boys". Yet Frozone winds up as a somewhat hen-pecked husband and Elastigirl winds up being a married housewife raising her kids. Seems like a good backhanded slap at both the playboy lifestyle and anti-family feminism to me...
The only one of the movies on those two lists that I've seen is Spiderman 2, which I got on DVD from Netflix a couple of weeks ago. I liked it better than the original!
No. Can you imagine the studio that could be funded if we could get conservative investors on the same page? RED STATE PRODUCTIONS.

When I think of what it could have been like! There was virtually no "teaching" about her Little Way. If someone went in to see the movie wanting to learn just who is this St. Therese, they would have been left very empty.
I know that people liked the movie but when I ask what they liked about it, they hem and haw and can't really say. Just because it is a Catholic movie, it does not mean it is good.
I'd love for someone to tell me what, exactly was good about the movie.
I don't think Mel has ever expected anything from Hollywood with regards to "The Passion", except maybe sniping, which he received in full measure.
This is a beautiful and profoundly reverant portrayal of Christ's passion. Your faith will be strengthened immensely by this film.
