HARRISBURG -- Bob Regola, who won the highest-profile race in the General Assembly last fall, was sworn in as a state senator Tuesday and promptly proposed a constitutional amendment to eliminate the Legislature's so-called lame-duck sessions.

Regola, R-Hempfield, defeated Democratic incumbent Allen Kukovich, of Manor, by more than 5,300 votes in the Nov. 2 general election in a campaign that cost $1.5 million. Kukovich had served 20 years in the state House and eight in the Senate.

By mid-day, three other senators had signed as co-sponsors of Regola's joint resolution to eliminate post-election sessions.

Pennsylvania's legislature is overpaid and spends too much time making mischief and growing the size of government. Bob Regola, our former township supervisor, was given little chance of winning this seat last spring, but win he did. A young and successful business owner, he promised to bring some common-sense management to Harrisburg and it looks like he didn't wait long to find his first windmill to tilt at. Good luck, Mr. Smith.

I'm glad to see there's a new republican in PA who's not shy about pushing for common sense actions. Is he a property rights advocate? Will he be interested in the STOP (Stop Taxing Our Property) efforts?

A 1.5 million $ race for PA state senate tells you all you need to know about how well these jobs actually pay (above and beyond the nice salary, perks, expense accounts for food, cars, etc.)

One of the planks Regola ran on was never raising taxes in his years as a township supervisor. He was well-liked by those who worked with him in the township government. Hempfield Township is not some rural backwater, but the biggest in the county.

His negatives were mostly from the loony left and some of the people who've worked for him in business-- he is evidently a very demanding employer. But the same can be said about anyone who built their own business.
