JERUSALEM (AP) - A pro-peace group is hoping that a potent mix of Hollywood glamour and religion will motivate Palestinians to vote in next week's presidential elections - and their star attraction is actor Richard Gere.
Gere, together with two religious officials, recorded a public service announcement calling on the Palestinians to vote in the Jan. 9 election to replace Yasser Arafat.
"Hi, I'm Richard Gere and I'm speaking for the entire world. We're with you during this election time. It's really important: Get out and vote," Gere said, according to a transcript of the announcement obtained by The Associated Press.
Gere ended the 80-second spot produced by the pro-peace group, "One Voice," with an appeal in Arabic: "Take part in the elections."
The ad is to be aired on Palestinian TV and Arabic satellite channels in the next few days, said Fathi Darwish, a Palestinian director of "One Voice." The group calls for the nonviolent creation of a Palestinian state.
A spokeswoman for Gere, who has also gained attention for his support for a Tibet free of Chinese rule, had no immediate comment.
Joining Gere in the announcement are Sheik Taissir Tamimi, the head of the Islamic court in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, Atallah Hanah, the spokesman of the Greek Orthodox Church in Jerusalem.
While Gere was chosen for his star appeal, it's not clear how much celebrity status he has in the occupied territories. "I've never heard of him before," Hanah said of his co-star.

Aren't gerbils desert rats from Palestine? Do you suppose Richard Gere knows this?
There goes the election. Who would vote now? LOL...
He speaks for the entire world? Um, I'm part of the world, and I didn't give him permission to speak for me.
I hate it when these egotistical blowhards from Hollywood think they speak for everyone.
Didn't John Kerry save a gerbil once ????????
Memo to Richard Gere: Hollywood "values" fuel the Islamist hatred of the Western World. You and your kind have done enough...
Hubris? Thy name is Hollywood. Hubris Unlimited? Thy name is Richard Gere. Hubris Unhinged? Thy name is Babs.
"Hi, I'm Richard Gere and I'm speaking for the entire world"
Whew! And we thought Penn was arrogant when he claimed to speak for just the USA.
Very articulate...love the poetry...so right on.
Does Gere really think he is the only one who wants peace in the world and has taken a spiritual journey. Photo ops with the Dali is not going to win hearts in Palestine. Gere's comment of " I'm Richard Gere and I'm speaking for the world." kind of has the same ring as Kerry's " I'm John Kerry and I'm reporting for duty." It begs the same response..."Who the f..k cares?!!!"
I loved the respnse of his counterpart in the commercial,
" I don't know who he is."ha.
Wow. Richard Gere's trying to be relevant again.
Ha ha.
I BLOCKED the USA Channel from my TV remote because those idiots were relentlessly running a nauseating ad for the movie. I mean that sucker was on EVERY commercial break.
I'm having JAG and Law and Order SVU withdrawal pain but those damn commercials were maddening as hell.
A little aside . . . Has anyone ever tried to send the USA Channel an email? Good luck. I spent over an hour trying to find an email address. I finally discovered their website is considered an "Informational" website only.
Hubris? Thy name is also The USA Channel.
I thought Gere was an infidel. Why would they listen to him? Is he a good infidel?
"Is he a good infidel?"
My guess is that he is at very least a great anti-American and that should be good enough for the palis.
