A Few of FR's Finest ....Every Day
FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders; tell a few jokes; learn a new word; write poetry; pray for those in need; and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997. Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001
So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I could no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I had been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.
Still that didn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why we've created a place for just that. This is a friendly room in JimRob's house where FReeper FRiends can gather every day and just say hello if that's all they want to do.
There's more of course. We sometimes feature different FReepers, with a little background information on who they are and what makes them who they are, along with a few photos you might not have seen on other threads; sometimes others write an essay for us to post as the feature for the day; sometimes our presentation is a human interest story found elsewhere that you might not have read; sometimes special holiday threads; but whatever the topic of the day, it is always with FR's Finest in mind and that is YOU!
If you would like to be featured, or would like to see someone else featured, please send me a private FR mail.
Every Monday we will post the photos of FR's Military Personnel that I have collected and put into groups; these will be available to view through a link the remainder of the week - every day just a click away. :) If you would like to add a photo of yourself or a loved one in the military, past or present, please let me know; I will hold it until I have enough for a new group.
Thank you, and please have fun with us...every day! ~ Billie

Will You Tell Them?
Read: Proverbs 24:10-12
Whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. John 11:26
Bible In One Year: Genesis 6-9
John, a friend of mine, was once addicted to drugs. Several times he nearly died. He was a broken man when he entered the Christian rehabilitation program that my husband and I established. By the end of the program, John had become a Christian.
One day as John strolled along a busy street, he began to see the bustling shoppers as God sees themdying people. He had learned from God's Word that those who die without Christ will spend eternity separated from Him. With deep concern, John thought, These people don't have to die!
We all need to see people as God sees them. But that revelation also brings responsibility. Solomon pleaded, "Deliver those who are drawn toward death, and hold back those stumbling to the slaughter" (Proverbs 24:11). He also warned that once our eyes are opened we can't pretend we don't know what to do. God, who weighs our hearts and keeps our souls, knows that we know, and holds us responsible to act (v.12).
Think of people you know who are without Christ. They don't have to die without Him! Jesus said, "Whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die" (John 11:26). Will you tell them this good news? Joanie Yoder
If we really care for those
Who live beneath God's wrath,
The gospel must be shared with them,
To turn them from death's path. Sper
Wanted: Messengers to deliver the good news.

This fellow is in the Sunni Triangle (he couldn't tell me where at the moment). Usually he is near Tikrit.
He said it is very hairy right now due to the elections. Most of the locals are laying low because of the attacks.
He has had a pretty rough tour for many reasons, he was even injured a while back but wanted to stay on.
He'll be home in Feb/March and can't wait (as I can imagine) but is keeping tough, he's proud of himself and he knows he is doing a good thing! He's a big Bush supporter, which I think is a testament to our President's leadership. To go through what this soldier has and still love and admire the man who sent him into battle is an amazing thing!

Vietnam memorial benefit Jan. 8
By: TIM MAYER - Staff Writer
CARLSBAD ---- Organizers say tickets are still available for a Saturday event to raise money for a monument that will honor North County residents who died in Vietnam.
"We still do have tickets available, and we really want to encourage people to come," said Lisa Limber, executive director of the Carlsbad Village Business Association.
The association, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Project, the Army and Navy Academy, and the San Dieguito Veterans have joined forces to raise money for the memorial they hope to erect in Carlsbad.
The 7:30 p.m. Saturday event at the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center, 3557 Monroe St., will feature music from the Vietnam era, guest speakers, and a reading of the names to be inscribed on the memorial.
Among those expected to attend are Stephanie Cavanaugh of Vista and members of her family. Her Marine Corps father, Lt. Col. Arthur C. Stephens Jr. died in Vietnam during his second tour of duty there in 1971.
"My father was a just a very loving person and dad and husband," said Cavanaugh.
Cavanaugh said the memorial will be a place where she, her eight brothers and sisters, and her father's many grand and great grandchildren can go to remember and learn about her father.
Having the local memorial "will be nice for the grandchildren and great grandchildren to easily visit and honor their grandfather, and also for my brothers and sisters and myself," she said.
But the memorial "will really be for everybody, not just me or my family," she said.
Thanks in part to a $6,500 grant from the city, organizers have raised a little more than $16,000 toward the project. The granite memorial ---- inscribed with the names of all North County residents who died in the war ---- will be erected on land being set aside by the Army and Navy Academy adjacent to Carlsbad Boulevard. Plans for the project, totaling about $50,000, include landscaped grounds and benches.
Limber said "this memorial will, in some small way, help bring closure and will also remember the lives of the young men who sacrificed for our nation so many years ago."
The project began about 18 months ago as a class assignment by Carlsbad High School history teacher Jack Frazier, himself a veteran who lost three cousins in Vietnam.
"It's way past time to recognize the sacrifice of these men," Frazier said. "With Vietnam turning out to be a central issue in this last (presidential) election, it's obvious Vietnam is still an open wound.
"This will be a place to sit and think and remember and come to the realization that there are people who appreciate the sacrifice that was made," he said.
The event will include an evening of entertainment featuring Vietnam-era music performed by two local bands, "The Langen Brothers" and "Generation Gap," patriotic music, a flag presentation by the Army and Navy color guard, and the reading of the names of all those identified from throughout North County ---- 93 thus far ---- who died in Vietnam.
Tickets cost $10 and are available by calling the business association at (760) 434-2553 or Frazier at (619) 885-8846.

N.C. units to play key role in Iraq Associated Press   North Carolinas military will dominate the conflict in Iraq this year, with about 8,000 soldiers from Fort Braggs 18th Airborne Corps and 14,000 Marines from bases here about to take over two of the most crucial roles in the fight. The task force led by Camp Lejeunes 2nd Marine Expe-ditionary Force will take over the wars toughest front-line assignment: security in Anbar Province, the region that includes Fallujah. The 18th Corps, under Maj. Gen. John Vines, will have an even bigger responsibility: taking command of day-to-day operations of the U.S.-led military coalition. The 18th Corps soldiers from Fort Bragg have already started flying out, and the Marine task force will begin leaving in the next few days. Maj. Gen. Thomas A. Braaten of New Bern, a retired former commander of all Marine Corps air bases on the East Coast, said the long-standing relationship between the two North Carolina forces will serve the Pentagon well in Iraq. The two commands work closely together and train together, he said. The guys see each other on a fairly frequent basis, so theyll dovetail pretty well and it will be a nice, easy mix. In addition, smaller North Carolina units will serve in Iraq in 2005. About 1,500 paratroopers of Fort Braggs 82nd Airborne Division left in early December to bolster security for national elections planned for Jan. 30. They could stay until early spring. North Carolina National Guard officials say that 1,000 to 2,000 Guard troops will be there at any given time in the year. All told, about one of every five soldiers will be from North Carolina bases. North Carolina also will send units to Afghanistan, including a brigade of several thousand paratroopers from Fort Braggs 82nd Airborne Division in May. To prepare for Iraq, the Marines have brushed up on skills such as how to react when traveling in a convoy thats attacked, a skill theyre certain to use following a tough year for occupation forces in Iraqs Anbar Province. Col. Ben Hodges, an assistant chief of staff of the 18th Corps, said military leaders are confident that the elections will happen but equally confident that they wont be peaceful. The 18th Corps wont be in charge then, but will be in Iraq getting up to speed. It will have to deal with the aftermath. I know its going to be ugly for the year were there, but Im optimistic, Col. Hodges said. We think were going to turn the corner and be well down the street.

A lady was picking through the frozen turkeys at the grocery
store, but couldn't find one big enough for her family.
Finally in desperation, she turned to a grocery stocker and
asked, "Do these turkeys get any bigger?"
The grocery stocker replied, "No ma'am, they're dead."
