A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day....01-03-05....Military Monday

A Few of FR's Finest
....Every Day
FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders;  tell a few jokes;  learn a new word;  write poetry;  pray for those in need;  and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I could no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I had been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.
Still that didn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why we've created a place for just that. This is a friendly room in JimRob's house where FReeper FRiends can gather every day and just say hello if that's all they want to do.
There's more of course. We sometimes feature different FReepers, with a little background information on who they are and what makes them who they are, along with a few photos you might not have seen on other threads; sometimes others write an essay for us to post as the feature for the day; sometimes our presentation is a human interest story found elsewhere that you might not have read; sometimes special holiday threads; but whatever the topic of the day, it is always with FR's Finest in mind and that is YOU!
If you would like to be featured, or would like to see someone else featured, please send me a private FR mail.
Every Monday we will post the photos of FR's Military Personnel that I have collected and put into groups; these will be available to view through a link the remainder of the week - every day just a click away. :)   If you would like to add a photo of yourself or a loved one in the military, past or present, please let me know; I will hold it until I have enough for a new group.
Thank you, and please have fun with us...every day! ~ Billie

O Flag of our Union

O flag of our Union,
To you we'll be true,
To your red and white stripes,
And your stars on the blue;
The emblem of freedom,
The symbol of right,
We children salute you,
O flag fair and bright!

LOL

Still holding at 39 but I may have to start holding at 40 next year. I think some of the Finest FReepers may remember how many years I've been holding. :)

LOL. You know, I miss you around here. I miss Just Frank too. I lost Silly Shelly long ago and haven't been able to find her.

Thanks. I'm doing good. Can't get much done on computer. I am on Starband and its very slow now a days and the weather has it completely down most of the time lately. Raining here and Starbands goes down in bad weather. And for the last few months, maybe longer its not much faster that a dial up.

It used to be really fast when I first got on it. It has really gone down hill.

I miss everyone here. I wish there were more hours in a day.

It seems that by the time I get away from Amy's Place, it is time to get offline and think about doing something domestic.

Just Frank hasn't been out of the woodshed for a very long time. He will really be upset about Silly Shelly taking off like that. I'm sure he will expect us to issue an amber alert. ;~)

I tell you Dubya, we have been sooooo happy with cable hookup. We used to have a dish. Dang thing would go out every time it rained. We only lose cable when the electric goes out and it only goes out when we have ice, which is almost never.

Hehe. She hung around my profile page for a long time, and then one day she turned into a red x. I haven't decided on a course of action yet, whether an Amber alert or a funeral is in order.

The weather affects my DirectWay also.

They did an upgrade recently .... I bought a new modem from them but it was reasonable. (can't remember how much now, tho). That seemed to help with speeding up the reception.

Maybe Starband will upgrade their equipment if enough people complain.

Thank you for the info. I have SBCGlobal at my office and I love it. I very seldom am in my office to get to use it. At my home office I will never be able to get SBC and probably not cable in my life time. I sure wish I could.

Good idea. I hope they will. They gave us credit on our last months bill for down time.

They haven't been very fast since they came out of BR.

Well, don't dispair. I think there will be one big direct connector for all computers one of these days. Whether it will be via phone, satelite or cable, it will cover everyone.

Here's something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up:

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining

network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

DUB HERE I JUST DID THIS ON STARBAND AND IT REALLY HELPED A LOT.

**LadyX enters the Finest Family Room, shaking her head**

WHAAAT??!! The last thing I remember here was posting on Christmas Eve, and from then on, it was a REALLY WILD RIDE!!

I watched Santa fly by with his sleigh, and Rudolph winked at me -- and strange things began to happen --

Would you believe I was taken aboard the sleigh and deposited in Turkey? -- seems jwfiv had arranged for my present to have lessons by the whirling dervishes in dancing!

I will give you all a little background.

Known to the west as Whirling Dervishes, the Mevlevi Order was founded by Mevlana Rumi in the 13th century. The Order wrote of tolerance, forgiveness, and enlightenment. They survive today as a cultural brotherhood. They are not theatrical spectacles but sacred rituals. The ritual of the Mevlevi sect, known as the sema, is a serious religious ritual performed by Muslim priests in a prayer trance to Allah. Mevlevi believed that during the sema the soul was released from earthly ties, and able to freely and jubilantly commune with the divine.

Dervish literally means "doorway" and is thought to be an entrance from this material world to the spiritual, heavenly world. The Whirling Dervishes played an important part in the evolution of Ottoman high culture. From the fourteenth to the twentieth century, their impact on classical poetry, calligraphy and visual arts was profound. Rumi and his followers integrated music into their rituals as an article of faith. Rumi emphasized that music uplifts our spirit to realms above, and we hear the tunes of the Gates of Paradise.

Leave it to Johnny Mac (/Fox) to come up with something totally unique!

=========================================

Waiting patiently for the sleigh to come back by, after 2 days of being stranded some Beduoins made an offer I couldn't refuse -- to go with them to Arabia to star in a movie they were making about Scheherazade - - 1001 Arabian Nights.

Can't begin to tell you all the script stories, naturally, but the Rimsky Korsakov musical score was fantastic. It was a truly unforgettable side trip!

Strange thing is, I remember only one thing that happened since, visiting some Marines in Iraq, and then finding myself standing here right now on Military Monday - January 2, 2005 ??!!

Sigh -- thanks, jwfiv --

It's good to be 'home."
